That is an absolute FACT about people who are far too wrapped up in being seen to be cool in their musical taste. Has been like that forever.
Dire Straits are comparable from back in the day.
Am I in the right place to say Coldplay are shit?

In general I’d agree but some bands, in my opinion, work better in arenas. Arcade Fire is a great example. I never saw Depeche Mode in a small venue but they are great at arena level. Most heavy metal is better in an arena as well; I’ve seen Iron Maiden at theatre, arena and stadium level and bigger is much better.

The Stones are lauded in arenas but the gigs they did on their acoustic tours in small venues were SO much imo
I think many people that bought Brothers in Arms when it was topping the album chart probably couldn’t name a previous album by the band.

I had all their albums before Brothers in Arms, never bought it and probably didn’t like it as it was overplayed and hyped up.

Coldplay aren't shit, I just find them really bland, uninspiring and boring. Oh, and they were using a backing track 
I can argue, and do argue, about most topics but I have rarely, if ever, get into slagging bands off. Music still is, and probably always will be, my number one interest and passion. I get so much from it, and figure if others get just a modicum of the enjoyment I get, whichever and whoever the artist that is, then they’re onto a good and positive thing. As for be cool, yes I like some “cool” stuff but I also have some very uncool stuff in my collection ….which is inevitable if you have been consuming with wide open ears for over 40 years.

It's like when that unsigned band you follow and love and have watched in umpteen toilets finally get the thing they've been working towards, and you've been championing - A Record Deal. Then they bring out that first single, that glorious crowd-pleaser you've loved a score or more times live. And it sounds tinny and weird and well... rubbish
