Anyway, how much do you know about North American history? Or African, or Asian? Do YOU happen to speak another language with any semblance of fluency, or do you expect everyone to speak English?

No, in your case clearly not. As a matter of fact I know that I have a better knowledge of American history based on the now ex step children and their friends there. The plain fact is that few Americans have any idea about any other nation. A TV news broadcast there will be local news (within a few counties let alone the whole state) and National news as long as it's either very bad or very good. Just about the only foreign news they get is either a Royal marriage failure or a major disaster, if there's no American connection you get nothing.

The fact that so many English people get confused with Australians is another sign. With the exception of PBS their terrestrial television shows virtually nothing that isn't made in the US, hence they can't distinguish accents and quite often think you're speaking a different language.

Given the amount of influence the US has on the rest of the world I think their insular ways are not a good thing.

I think too much can be made of the need to study other faiths, histories and global stuff, and not enough importance placed on things at home - our history, our environment, our health and our society.

The problem is you have to have as wide a range as possible in order to teach kids the key skills that history involves - its not simply indoctrination through carefully selected knowledge.

The Black Civil Rights Movement is a key moment in global history, and still has repercussions for the world today (i.e. last Tuesday). Its also an accessible example of individuals in history and some key themes.

And what has it got to do with Britain? Well, funnily enough, the first few lessons of the module tends to deal with how BRITAIN stole these people's homelands, and shipped them off to America in bondage. So theres your Britain.
