The problem at the moment is that half of one side is closed of for (I hope) refurbishment creating a couple of bottle necks which American tourists feel the need to stand in whilst admiring the roof.

I also noticed them starting to reduce things as I was leaving but I was in desperate need of liquid refeshment by then. A good tip to arrive about 3pm ish I guess to pick stuff up for a reasonable price.

Good info cheers. I thought the battle to save the market had been won but it seems the evil Man of Harveys got his way to some extent. Well in my book it's well worth losing part of one of the oldest and best loved markets in London so that he can save 30 seconds on his commute past every day.

Cant think of anywhere better to buy good, fresh, quality "BRITISH" food!

I do it, butchers are far better as well and any good butchers offer you special deals you would never get in supermarkets!

For fruit & veg, I tend to shop at Taj. It's better and cheaper.

The Open Market is too expensive.

Their produce is superior to supermarkets, and cheaper, and a wider range.

Having said that, regarding the Open Market, the meat and fish counter in the 'tunnel' is very good. The butchers on the London Road entrance to the Open Market is awful - fatty, inferior cuts.

Taj is definitely the most expensive place I've been in Brighton, for veg. Even more so than waitrose generally and you often have to pick through dried out or half-rotten stock. The butchers there is good though.

Shop at Dalston Market, classes it self as a world market.
And its infrastgructure is certainly third world.

You camn literally buy anything there. Cow foot, fish from the caribbean, and the odd monkey head, if you know who to ask!

I agree. Taj is great for obscure food items but it's not a place to go for the main shop. I don't find the stock half-rotten though - just expensive.

Slightly o/t but at the end of a stag night near Brick Lane, in the drunken state I was in, I found it absolutely hilarious buying a bacon bagel, and made sure everyone knew too.

we use the markets in Llanelli and Carmarthen and both are very cheap and extremely good when they are in season you can buy 3 cauliflowers as big as your head for a £1 and the apples are simply the best 2k, again for a £1.
this is one of the great advantages of living in rural Wales even the vets bills are half what they are in Brighton and with seven cats thats some savings.
mind you if I were loaded I would move back to Brighton in a second.

Edit: I know, you're talking about Taj in Western Road.

Taj is cheaper and better than Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco by a country mile, and has a wider range than the Open Market.
