The old cathedral is Ok but the new one is a modernist nightmare. We have the Ricoh. Which is good for concerts, if not for football. A superb state of the art Hospital. Coventry has quite a few parks as well. Some of them are so good the somali's hide their weapons in them

I think that was the problem with Coventry. Not much thought was given to its rebuilding. A lot of the high rise flats have been pulled down and there is a lot of regeneration going on. There are some very poor areas here though.

What's really shocking is how poor markets are over here. I've frequently holidayed in France and it's a joy to go to the local markets and see stalls bulging with decent produce at a fair price. Why do markets over here have to be such half-arsed affairs?

I really wish we had something akin to Borough market in Brighton. They could easily do it at the open market but nobody seems to want to invest in it

For fruit & veg, I tend to shop at Taj. It's better and cheaper.

The Open Market is too expensive.

Taj is way overpriced. I buy my veg from Teresa at the Mears veg shop at London Road Market. V rare I pay over 8 quid for 2 big bags of fruit and veg.

That may or not be true but is blatently not the reason why French markets are better than ours.

I think the Open Market's very good. The two big fruit and veg places are good, I really like Principal Meats, the fish one and the cheese and egg bloke, the Thai place is very good, decent florist and the weird little french place in the middle is pretty good. If what you want is cheap, good quality food the Market's fine. If you want a lifestyle market with vast amounts of pointless organic or wierd foodstuffs then go to Borough Market

Well I used to think like that too, but it seems the credit crunch has had an effect and there are some real bargains to had in there.

I bought some free range chicken on Saturday, cheaper than I could get in the supermarket.

Shop at Dalston Market, classes it self as a world market.
And its infrastgructure is certainly third world.

You camn literally buy anything there. Cow foot, fish from the caribbean, and the odd monkey head, idf you know who to ask!


Produce is cheaper than local supermarkets and is as good, some amazing deals, on veg and fruit that is not "supermarket" fresh.

Great place.

Grandad's Bikes is also excellent for quick repairs.

The egg and cheese place is really excellent - fantastic value (although I miss the old French cheese stall).

The point about the Open Market is that it was opened as a place to give ordinary people access to good, fresh food. I'm the third generation of my family to shop there and long may it continue.

Just don't agree.

Their produce is superior to supermarkets, and cheaper, and a wider range.

Having said that, regarding the Open Market, the meat and fish counter in the 'tunnel' is very good. The butchers on the London Road entrance to the Open Market is awful - fatty, inferior cuts.

The best fruit and veg market I've ever visited in London is in Camden. Only two or three stalls, but the quality was much higher than you'd get in Marks and Spencers / Waitrose (where they obviously pick only the absolute perfect produce)

It was cheap as well.

yes, its lovely when local traditions and suchlike are enjoyed and passed down the generations.

My local is Borough Market near London Bridge. I was shopping there Sat afternoon and you can find some lovely stuff there and have a pint of Harveys after. On the downside, it's ludicrously expensive, absolutely mobbed and in terms of customers it's about as far removed from a local market as you can get. I reckon on an average saturday more punters there were born in Japan than SE1.

But towards the end of the market you can pick up some real bargains. I also came home with a huge spanish sausage for £4.

Something else worth looking out for.

A couple of chicken breasts wrapped around wild boar sausage meat, and wrapped up bacon and herbs.

2 for a tenner, you'd struggle to make that for that price even if you shopped at Aldi. Had one on Sunday evening and it was very very good.

Some right bargains, but you need to hunt for them.

The problem at the moment is that half of one side is closed of for (I hope) refurbishment creating a couple of bottle necks which American tourists feel the need to stand in whilst admiring the roof.

I also noticed them starting to reduce things as I was leaving but I was in desperate need of liquid refeshment by then. A good tip to arrive about 3pm ish I guess to pick stuff up for a reasonable price.
