Worst referee performance I have ever seen

Admit it, you forgot your specs altogether yesterday, didn't you?

Guys, some of you really make me laugh.....I particularly enjoyed the refereeing conspiracy theory against us (yeah right!). Wise up, our disciplinary record is a disgrace and we need to do something about it. Two sent off in twelve minutes. 1. A clear punch to the kidneys (right in front of me) 2. Barnes went into a tackle foot off the ground and made contact. I don’t give a toss about what else happened who threw a handbag or what. Two sendings off in 12 minutes is not good enough.

All the ref problems kicked off yesterday by the refs failure to punish an elbow to the face on Vincelot which happened with the ref not far away. If he had punished that with a free kick the game would have taken a different course. The ref was young and inexperienced and looked out of his depth from the start. He got caught between a desire to keep the game flowing and punishing foul play. The 4th official appeared to ref for the first 15 mins. Neither the Albion or Burnley are dirty teams and there was not a bad tackle in the whole game apart from the tackle on Barnes that got him sent off. And that looked more clumsy than with intent. If the ref had shown some commonsense rather than desire to be the centre of attention we could have had a good game. He clearly knew he was in deep trouble by the stream of bad decisions that dominated the rest of the game. Corners and throw ins given the wrong way and 2 incidents of hands raised that went unpunished. It is about time refs were reminded that soccer is an entertainment and we pay good money to watch not it - not officious officials seeking 15 mins of fame. In 53 years of watching the Albion I have never seen such a hapless and pathetic exhibition. If he had the sense to give a free kick after the elbow or quietly speak to the players to calm down early hot headedness (the game had hardly started) we could have had a game to remember for all the right reasons.

Can someone tell me the last time when Albion were so favoured by officials that we left the ground grateful for the officials' favour but embarrassed by it?

One that sticks in the mind is Gillingham at home in the league. It was an evening game at Withdean (could have been a Friday night). I may have got it wrong but think the ref sent off two of their players that night too. He was so biased against Gillingham it was funny and embarrassing.

has the official reason for Barnes' sending off been reported? There was quite a bit of arguing after the foul and maybe Barnes said something he shouldn't have.

sorry meant Tanno. No the ref was average....and I am on nothing, just don't see everything through blue and white specs.

Interesting - only two mentions of seeing things through Blue & White specs on this fine forum, by you & The Complete Badger. I will leave it to the forum to come to their own conclusion!

From when red and yellow cards can be given to two footed tackles and everything else that has been discussed from yesterday game it always amazes me how little some people actually know about the laws of the game and how a referee interprets them.

I think you are missing the point sunshine. The thread of this post reads 'Worst referee performance I have ever seen', clearly this was not. Both sending off's were correct and maybe, just maybe he might have booked a few more or given a penalty....but the worse ever...............No surely not. If you think so, your are clearly deluded and have a short memory - did you not see Southampton away?
But maybe I am wrong and the fact that we have the worst disciplinary record in the championship is because of a conspiracy theory where all refs in the Football League are all hell bent on picking on Brighton & Hove Albion?

Well its been years since I was called sunshine :lolol:

Yes saw Southampton away, overall this was a far worse refereeing decision. Quite simply!

On the football league show commentary they weren't surprised that player was sent off, just that it was a Brighton player. It was a shocking tackle and the ref get in badly wrong. The fact that we got all the 50-50 decision and a load of 40-60 decisions in the second half would back that up. I've no complaints about the venicelot decision as the ref didn't have a choice. I do have a problem about the face grab on El-abd as I always thought that raising a hand to a players face was a straight red.

I'll add one then - I am amazed anyone believes that Barnes shouldn't have been sent off, as straightforward a decision as I've seen.

From where I was sitting, pitch-side in the East stand, the Barnes sending off was completely the wrong call. Barnes was jumping to avoid the two footed tackle coming in at him and then he was more or less assaulted by the Burnley fella. Somehow that equates to a red for Barnes? Shocking.

Still, the boys did themselves proud today. Not many teams could play a game 9 against 12 and only lose by the one goal.

Here's my tuppence worth.

First one - ref sent a player off for something he quite clearly had not seen, on the say-so of one of the other officials. Oatway's reaction afterwards was quite instructive - he was less than pleased with the Burnley bench and clearly thought they'd been instrumental in getting Vincelot sent off. It's a big call to give somebody a straight red when you have absolutely no first hand idea what's gone on.

Second one, I just think he got that completely wrong. The fact that there's so much debate, even now, when some people have seen it on replays, strongly suggests that it was, again, a big call to red card Barnes. The big cheer which went up from most of the northern end of the ground clearly showed that many people thought the Burnley boy had got the card. I guess the real proof of that pudding will be if the club appeals it (or indeed, both of them).

Anyway, Nobby Horton said at half time that it was harsh. Good enough for me. So, through my admittedly biased eyes, Mr Pawson joins Gerard 'nickname rhymes with' Prosser and Kelvin 'five penalties' Morton in Brighton refereeing infamy.

Where do we go next if it is not the Madejski, scene of the most anti-Albion performance that I have ever seen from a referee (in December, 2005, when we lost 5-0).
