Rose in summer which is a bit :safeway2: allegedly, I notice it's now being called Blush by more and more vineyards.

Red Rioja or Navarra in winter, cheapish and a bit more macho ;)

Depends on the food I'm eating...

Fish or goat's cheese - Sancerre, although I was served Reisling recetly to go with salmon, and, if it's a good one, it's a better wine.

Chicken - Sauvignon blanc, preferably Marlborough Hills from New Zealand.

Beef - Merlot, usually Chilean. Or Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia.

Failing that, for reds, it's Chianti Classico (must have the cockerel on the label), a rioja in the summer, or Brunello di Montalcino for a special occasion.

Champagne - has to be Pol Roger.

Sancere is my favourite white and Rioja is probably my favourite red, although I do like the new world Shiraz's, although they are very heavy.

Unfortunately I'm nursing a bloody great hangover after drinking too much red last night.

I drink a lot of wine with my girlfriend over the weekend. Its actually become my drink of choice becuase when I used to drink lager it upsets my stomach bing time and if I am not careful I need to rush for a no2.

After a while drinking Wine you start to become professional. You know what tastes good and what tastes bad.

I have been in a couple of situations @ work where everyone has ordered lager and I had to rethink my plans as ordering Wine looks a bit poofey. Is Wine poofey?

I think Wine is only poofey in this country.

In France, Italy, Spain as you know its normal culture to have a glass of wine or a spirit at a Tabac before dinner.

Drinking wine in a pub is'nt poofey at all fella, There's been many a time i've enjoyed a bottle of wine in a pub rather than sinking pints.

The only thing I dont like about wine drinkers are the people who insist you must have certain wines to go with certain meals, What a load of rubbish! Wine is down to personal taste and if I want to drink a red with a chicken or fish meal, or a white with a beef dinner then thats what i'll do. A lot of it is just down to wine snobbery.

Top choice - that will be Christmas Day wine at the Gwylan household.

Apart from that I loved Southern French reds.

You've just contradicted yourself there.

You said drinking certain wines going with certain meals is 'rubbish', then you say it's down to personal choice. In my experience, the personal choice IS that certain wine. It's got nothing to do with snobbery, and everything to do with appreciation of a given wine.

Apart from FA Cup tickets, this is always bound to cause conflict.

Bottom line is you drink what you like.

Wine conniseurs(sp?) or ponsy pretentious twats if you prefer, will give you all this bollocks about being a phillistine if you smell wine and cant smell hollyhocks or raspberries ( See the program on at 9 tonight with the bloke from Top Gear and that Oz bloke) whereas, 99.99999% of the population have no idea if a wine is "superior" to any other wine, they just know what wine tastes good and what doesn't. Hense the amount of decent cheap wine you can get from sainsbury's, Tesco's and M&S

For the record, I adore Hardy's Stamp label wine, Quincy French white, Sancerre( cos my mate has a vinyard outside Orleans and I get a case every year), Aussie Shiraz, South African Stellenbosch white and Anjou Rose if its cold. ( Borough Brook wine red or white from M&S - £5 a bottle is very drinkable)

as 10cc say, not in hove
old world wines exclusively for me, i can't stand these "full-bodied" australians and south africans, far too much alcohol and far too much taste. yuk!

whites: sancerre, chablis or a muscadet for seafood

rose: sancerre

red: bordeaux reds are the world's finest, some of the italians, spanish and hungarians are delicious.

there's no need to buy from further abroad

I'm not talking about the people who choose to drink certain wines with certain meals like yourself, It's the twats who try to preach to others what they should be drinking & when they should be drinking it!

A few years ago I won a weekend in Reims for a Champagne tour and allthough it was a great weekend I could'nt believe some of the wine snobs that were on the tour. Even down to some stuck up cow who started having a go at Mrs Bulldog because she dared to say that she quite likes German wines.

German wines have had a pretty bad press over the past 10-15 years, and in many cases - it's quite justified. However, if you can locate a 2003 German Reisling, I can thoroughly recommend it.
