German wines have had a pretty bad press over the past 10-15 years, and in many cases - it's quite justified. However, if you can locate a 2003 German Reisling, I can thoroughly recommend it.

Not sure what's available in Toronto.

I prefer Aussie reds and French whites for normal drinking and I've never found a Rose I like. Probably the best mass produced Aussie for me is The Old Footbolt Shiraz but you can't beat a Sancerre or Chablis in summer or with fish. For something dead special but not massively expensive a 1998 Bordeaux such as a Pommeral (sp?) or St Emillion Grand Cru can't be beat - but I buy mine in France when I visit my mum as it's only about 15 - 25 Euros there

Drinking wine in a pub is'nt poofey at all fella, There's been many a time i've enjoyed a bottle of wine in a pub rather than sinking pints.

I think there is a 'poofy' stigma associated with the consumption of wine in a pub here. If the lads are getting in a round of pints, asking for 'a large glass of dry white' doesn't seem to quite fit.

When I was in Australia recently I got totally fed up with their bloody lagers - probably because, other than with a curry, I'm not a lager drinker here. So I resorted to having glasses of wine - there was a far wider choice than we generally have in pubs here and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. If I was out here, I'd have been on the cider.

Agree with the sentiment on having a bottle though. Although I am predominantly a white drinker, it's great to be able to settle down in a cosy warm pub on a cold Wintry day with a decent bottle of red. Fab.

I'm not talking about the people who choose to drink certain wines with certain meals like yourself, It's the twats who try to preach to others what they should be drinking & when they should be drinking it!

A few years ago I won a weekend in Reims for a Champagne tour and allthough it was a great weekend I could'nt believe some of the wine snobs that were on the tour. Even down to some stuck up cow who started having a go at Mrs Bulldog because she dared to say that she quite likes German wines.
You're quite right - my only reservation would be if people preferred blended piss like Jacob's Creek, because it's been mixed to be as bland a commodity as possible. And, as has been said, your missus has better taste in wines than the snobs who were trying to patronise her.

I'd recommend a trip to Rudesheim, a touristy but great fun little wine village full of bars with oompah bands not that far from Frankfurt, with a cable car up over the vinyards etc etc.

I remember a few years back when we had a few London away games. About 6 or 7 of us used to hit the pubs and have a few bottles of wine, been on the lager all day and it was a nice change. A bit of culture never done anyone any harm!

Thats why I have a yoghurt.

On wines, not a fan of white wine, never have been, but I do like a red. The GDC are often seen armed with a selection of reds and port for the train journey on an away day.

Cannot beat a decent Claret, although am becoming hooked on some of the Chilean numbers around at present.

You obviously like the full bodied type then. Chilean reds are very nice, especially merlots - good tanins and very velvety.

This seems like a good thread to say Ta to The Wookie for his voucher thread, stocked up nicely for Christmas on that with at least one Sancerre, a Ch du Pape and some other stuff. Merci.

I do not mind a Burgundy now and then, but with French wine I tend to go for Bordeaux's because as you picked up I tend to prefer the full bodied wine.

Cannot get into Rioja, too many of them taste like they were made in the hills the day before and chucked into bottles.
