Yes I think we will. Don't think we'll win the tournament but I don't think this German team is much cop either so for that reason I'm in.

I'll be supporting England, through force of habit and spending evenings in the pub with my mates. What [MENTION=232]Simster[/MENTION] wrote just above resonates strongly with me, though.

As for other comments, I’ve come to expect them from NSC and just ignore them. Just seems mad to me that people bother to open an England thread if they have no interest, let alone bother to write a post on it to let everyone know they’re not bothered. Odd behaviour for me constantly on NSC England threads but hey, I’m not the thread police, just my opinion. I’d never be embarrassed to be from somewhere just because of some idiots who happen to be from somewhere act like idiots - every country, Town, city and village in the world could say same thing if that was true

The thread started with the question "Will England beat Germany?" Personally I do have an interest in this and hope that we win, so that's why I opened it. Quite obvious really.
My point was that it would be typical for us to win now that I am finally very ambivalent to the result. Over the past 20 years we've had hooliganism, shite performances and now Brexit. Even the dreary, out of touch national anthem makes me cringe. I still can't see how anyone can be inspired by such dross - the UK isn't even mentioned and it's not even an English national anthem. As I say, sadly I don't need to go searching too hard for reasons as to why I don't take pride in being English anymore.

I understand and respect your undying enthusiasm for the England team, and I am sad that I don't feel much for them any more.
I can't speak for Simster, but I suspect that like me he will have been an enthusiastic supporter of England in WC90, Euro 96, WC98 etc.
Brexit, and the division that it has caused in this country, followed by this shambles of a corrupt and deceitful Prime Minister and government, was the straw that broke the camel's back with me, too. Many England supporters booing 'the knee', booing other countries' national anthems, and general shitty behaviour in too many instances means that I feel no kinship for them.
But down the pub with my mates, I will be supporting England. Most of my friends don't share my apathy for the team, though they understand why I feel as I do.
It's not as bad as 2016 - I felt nothing for England then. Three days after the Brexit vote England lost to Iceland, and this felt like schadenfreude to me.

Yeah it's a perfectly valid contribution, as if you needed any backing up (but there you have it). Not one I 100% agree with - I see a few 'green shoots of recovery' in terms of reasons for national pride for want of a better phrase - but there's an obvious difference between being @embarrassed to come from somewhere" and being less arsed about how the national team performs.

I didn’t open this thread on England’s next game to see the same old anti-England posts and wanted to talk about the game and the excitement and enjoyment of our country being in the competition still. I don’t personally think we’ll win either, but it’s the hope that gets most excited every 2 years.
Anyway, as I say I’m not getting involved in opinions and feelings I find totally different to mine - it’s all opinions and I respect that deep down, but on the surface I struggle with it tbh - and that comes with being a passionate person and a passionate football supporter from Sussex, England in my honest opinion.

This. I don't think the Albion will win anything ether but I still support them? As for Brexit etc what the hell has that got to do with the football team? Booing the knee is hardly anyone and they'll be plenty of people at the Albion who'd agree with them? Do we start following Palace but only until they some of them do the same? Supporting England doesn't mean you agree with everything that goes on in it. It's a country and a football team not a political party or a religion. We are not all of the same or even sane mind....

I go against the grain of most people on here
When I was a kid/teenager England games seemed far more important than Brighton games
I would go and watch Brighton every two weeks or so,regardless of the result
An England game seemed quite rare in comparison and as it was often live on TV
So it was always a big game
Even now,my support for Brighton hasn't wavered and never will
But nor has my support for England
I would still prefer England to win the World Cup than Brighton win the league
And I'll tell you why
Because it would give the whole country a massive lift,instead of just the county of Sussex
Everyone jumps on board even people not interested in football
I was unfortunate/lucky to be living in France when they won the World Cup
The nation really came together and there was a feel good factor for weeks
We had a little taster when we beat the aussies in 2003
But if the football team could do it,it would be amazing!

Good good - get behind the lads. I think we’ll lose but looking at the major tourno results with pens counting as a draw, it’s dead level since 66 so maybe we don’t deserve the Germany always beat us line.
Unfortunately you can't eliminate the penalty wins it's part of football, so they do have the upper hand but not by much
I admire your unerring support for England but I do feel you need to understand that some people can be critical of the team/manager/FA etc whilst still being supporters of the team, this is my stance.
For me we have the best crop of attacking players we have had for years but they are lead my a coach totally out of touch with the style of football needed to suit them and tactically blind he is not going to change, coupled with the usually bungling FA Therefore my critisism is more out of frustration rather than knocking the team.
I also understand Simster being p1ssed at the state of parts of this country but I don't think that is a reason to be ashamed of being English the are more pluses, it used to be the case that the national team took us away from all the day to day crap but that no longer seems to be the case.
I hope we beat the Germans but I just can't see it happening unfortunately.
