My store manager was going mad in the store and then walked into his office ranting and raving as the police didn't turn up to move them on they have dumped loads of shite over the back of the car park and there was a couple of them in the store shopping being followed by undercover security hope they get done for nicking

There is a simple answer for travelers, there are plenty of campsites around the country where they can stay as long as they abide by the site rules and pay the fees. Of course something they have no intention of doing. A few years ago the police directed a number of travelers into a field behind where i worked in Burgess hill to get them off the road. Our business was a Builders Merchants and yes you have guessed it the next two nights they came over the fence and stole goods and fuel from the lorries, we had them on cctv but they wore hoods so police wouldn't take any action. Have you also noticed when they do leave a site they quite often leave behind empty gas bottles. As normal practice is to swap empties for new ones, why leave them behind. Maybe because they steal new ones? I do agree they have the right to travel around, but like the rest of us they should have to abide by the rules.

They have to go through the same procedures every council goes through to get an order to move them on. This administration is no quicker or slower than previous ones - despite what some people have deluded themselves into thinking.

Believe me-there is nothing mock about my outrage-all the time people like you and Lord Bracknell wind the rest of us up we will bite. Im 56 mate and have lived a life. If it was up to me I would take most politicians/councillors out and put them up against the nearest wall....there are to many rules and regulations on the side of the wrongdoers. Meanwhile I hope your happy that this months community charge is going towards the clear up operation at Wild Park and the next bill for trying to evict them from Sainsburys. You are the deluded one---the law needs to be changed--but I'm not gonna hold my breath on that.

I've read through this thread and think that the vast majority of what you have said is spot on, I am completely in agreement with most of your opinions about this subject. I have nothing against travellers personally, but the way they treat places they invade is completely out of order in my opinion and they should be moved on the police. The cops should have the power to remove them from a site. If they can't at the moment, that needs changing and quickly.

Actually there is something the council can do to move travellers on -I can't remember the exact number but it's something like a section 28. Problem being it has to be issued in something like 48 hours - something the council ( of any colour ) seem incapable of doing.

Personally I'd suggest a mass paintball attack !

A footnote: My daughter has just passed Wild Park on the bus. The yellow police camera van that has been parked for almost two weeks was being towed onto a low loader. I think you'll find that the magistrates would probably impose a fine of around £100 for such an offence, if the authorities thought the case was worth pursuing.

Sounds interesting - I must go and have a look tomorrow!

But I can tell you that when private clamping/towing/blocking in was criminalised on 1st October under the Protection of Freedoms Act, there were additional powers granted to the Police to be able to remove unwanted vehicles under certain circumstances...trouble is that there vehicles have people in them so they probably can't touch them.

I don't have much sympathy for your Store Manager who seems to think Sainsburys can 'fine' people in the car park for putting their Blue Badge the wrong way up...what goes around, comes around!

It's's a level 3 fine, maximum of £1000, and Guideline starting point of band A, 50% of relevant weekly income. Plus costs and victim surcharge. If there are previous similar offences, then the magistrates are likely to increase the penalty.

Give them a ticket every time they drive across and they'll soon get fed up and go somewhere legal.

My house used to be well known to gypsy travellers - as a place that was worth avoiding.

A few years ago, I had a very interesting conversation with an elderly woman who was born in the house I live in. In her time, there was no piped water supply to the house, although there was a well and regular deliveries of water in milk churns. She told me that the gypsy travellers who called round regularly knew one thing about the house - which was NEVER to let their horses drink from the well, because the water was so foul.

I don't think we disagree with what the Guideline fine is. The facts are, though, that this has never been used as a mechanism for controlling traveller encampments. So your suggestion that there may be previous similar convictions is unlikely to apply.
