I am totally gosmacked by this. Being s season ticket holder for many many years I had no idea a "stranger" couldn't just turn up and get a ticket. How ridiculous is that? Our ticketing system is beyond a joke now.

I have never wished that we had fans like Leeds, not once!

That is how businesses make money. You might have a season ticket for the cinema, but they do not ban other patrons. Is not the word "General" a clue? Does this not mean that wonderful people like you have had the opportunity to purchase their own seats. Then the |Club makes money out of the rest otherwise would we not be playing to 4000 every week.

You wish you had fans like Leeds, it must be shit to be a Brighton fan with no atmosphere and no one turning up to home games.

What does it feel like to go from the Champions League to the Johnstone Paint Trophy as your best chance of a cup? What does it feel like to support a club that is (was - since Newcastle, lol) national laughing stock hated and ridiculed by millions?

I guess there are two sides to this story.

The club don't want Man City Fans in the Brighton end. Good idea therefore not to sell tickets over the 'phone to people not previously on the database - there are lots of City fans who live in Sussex, and the away end sold out very quickly.

Imagine what it would be like on here next week if there were loads of City fans in the South Stand....."how did the club allow that to happen blah blah when I've been going to the Albion for 40 years blah blah"

It does however seem crazy that an 80 year old Brightonian cannot walk into the club shop and buy a ticket - surely bit of common sense was required here.

When we get to Falmer, (actually it should be done a minimum year in advance) the club need to invest in some decent Marketing people who can get the stadium filled every week (Southampton went from 14k at the Dell to nearly 30k at St Marys)

Pricing however is crucial,

Christ what an over reaction. Basically if you have been to see the Albion in the last 10 years you are on the database and therefore are able to buy a ticket. To choose the biggest game the club has had in a while to suddenly come out and start supporting and then disappear into the night again while preventing others from getting a ticket is all the club have tried to do. To get yourself on the databse all anyone needed to do was go and see a game since the draw was announced so getting yourself on the database not difficult really is it, but no that would require people not moaning. 100% sure the game will sell out through season tickets, memberships and people on the database perhaps people not on it would like to come and see the next game

Agree 100% I suppose the club would say that as the didn't know him, old bloke or not, they were scared he might go and sell his ticket to a City fan. Mind you the same could be said of anybody. Like you (and others) have said though common sense should have prevailed. No surprise that it didn't.

I must admit to being a bit shocked by this thread.

It seems the club are going to sell-out for the Man City game. So, what they are doing is ensuring that only fans who have been to withdean before get a ticket. It makes sense to me - The club are simply trying to avoid another West Ham fiasco, whereby lots of 'plastics' get tickets, annoying the regular fans.

It is the regular fans (customers) that earn the club money, they should be given priority over Withdean-virgins.

I very much doubt these policies will carry on when we move to falmer - general sale will mean general sale. And, what is more, we should be able to purchase tickets on the gate!

(as a side issue; I don't understand what the guy's age has to do with things)

Agreed

A shame for the old fella - would surely have been possible to add him to the database since he had ID? Then if he sold the ticket, the club have come back.

I see how the 'old man' clearly isn't a hooligan, tout etc. However, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of age - just because he is old does not mean that the club should have dropped their 'you must be on our records' rule. Had they done this for an 80 year old, they would have had to do it for everybody.

Cue ticket mayhem.

(Before anyone asks, I don't know how it is legal to charge seniors less for their tickets - just one of those quirks).

Strings, its not legal, same as giving them free transport on the buses, or students getting a discount in certain shops. As you say, its discrimination based on age

I take your point, but once again I think common sense should have prevailed. If tickets are still available now then we're not in another 'West Ham' situation. All the priority cases have been dealt with and it's now just us Big Game Charlies and casual fans left.

Ok he wasn't on the database. So add him there and then (the same with anyone else who's made the effort to go to the club shop in person, like a newcomer to the area). It's not a legal requirement that you HAVE to be on a database, merely the club policiy for this match.

With a bit of flexibility an old man wouldn't have had a wasted journey and the club would have made another sale.

I'm fairly sure for most games general sale does mean general sale. The database rule is specific to the city game. Its true that customer service could've been better in this case though

That's the point. Not sure he's been treated badly (based on what we have been told), just insensitively. Cue a call from Dick to the old fella (via his son on here) and a seat in the Directors box.

Everyone should show a bit more respect to the old.

I thought that as well (First Comment). With regards to the second comment, common sense does not enter it anymore, I know where I work if I bent the rules a little (even in the name of common sense and good customer service) I would find myself up on a charge
