Reeves did PPE at Oxford then an MA in Economics at LSE. Following that she worked at the Bank of England then HBOS (Controversially, her LinkedIn said she was an Economist at HBOS when in fact it was a retail banking gig)

How many of the myriad Tory chancellors since 2010 were better qualified?

Osbourne had a history degree then worked in journalism. Hunt a BA in PPE then worked as an English teacher before trying and failing to establish some start-ups.

Kwarteng did have a PHD in Economic History but I'm not sure his thesis on the Recoinage Crisis of 1695 helped him in his short-lived attempt to run (ruin?) the British economy
Reeves is definitely going to need her degree in PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) over the coming year..

Just before I put this on ignore, as I do with all politics threads (= a much less stressful NSC experience), I would suggest that Reeves is in for the long haul as Chancellors in new governments generally are (Osborne, Brown, Howe, Healy etc.).

Replacing a Chancellor looks like panic which is the last thing the fragile economy / markets / BoE want to see at the moment. In any case, they are always only a figurehead. The Treasury is a massive department stuffed with seasoned economists and advisors. Almost nothing that comes out of their mouths at budget time is dreamed up by them as individuals so being ‘qualified’ is something of a red herring. Their role is to not spook the horses.

Chancellors actually need to be dull and uninspiring and steady — qualities Rachel Reeves has in abundance. Think Javid, Sunak, Hammond, and king of the grey men, Alistair Darling. Reeves is the perfect female equivalent, and will be around for a long time.

Obviously Rachel Reeves. Your post is just pure hyperbole.
I don’t think there is any ‘obviously’ about it, despite what the party faithful on here say.
Sounds a bit like the Board of the footy club stating that ‘they have full confidence in the manager.’……..and then sooner or later said manager is gone. We are not at the ‘sooner’ stage yet, but if I was a very rich farmer😉, I wouldn’t bet the farm on a replacement further down the line.
PS. I don’t read the Daily Mail!😁

The lettuce lost her job for doing less damage that the boe has said wasn't all her.
Only because her colleagues from the ‘strong and stable’ party got rid of her 🤷🏻‍♂️

Looks like Musk and the Mail have stirred a few.

If we believe in sovereign democracy then the answer is RR. If you believe in foreign actors seeking to undermine democratically elected governments, then you’re more likely to vote for someone else.

Open your eyes people.
If they've upset Musk and The Mail they must be doing something right.

The economy needs time and a growth pill and it’ll be fine.

In for the the long haul indeed?

Hoping to fill the claimed £20b hole in the budget by taxing dead farmers was never likely to succeed in just 12 months.

Poor judgement or ill-advised? Either way, farmers IHT will forever be known as the Reeves tax.

This is all being stirred by a loose cabal that includes this mob. Jonathan Harmsworth’s Mail were going big on this last Sunday. A week later and they’ve stirred it up big time.
"Voters furious...."

No, manipulated and indoctrinated Daily Mail readers, who hate Labour anyway, are furious.

Good. These landowners need to pay their way

Only if you want to revel in it for party political purposes.

It could equally be known as the inheritance tax that is less than half what the rest of us pay.

(Not interested re-engaging with this, having had an interesting discussion with another poster who actually knows something about farming.)

Best of luck with you tory electioneering campaign.
You'll need it.

I deliberately posted the views of The Observer to try and subtly show that criticism of the current government is not just a far right agenda.

I personally certainly don’t read the Daily Mail, support the far right or any of that stuff, yet I’m concerned about the economy and key decisions made so far.

It’s just so so easy to dismiss everyone who disagrees with us as being critically different to the most extreme conclusion.

I.e:

In theory as an admirer of New Labour, this should be the government for me. It’s just really not working out the way I’d hoped. Maybe they’re doing brilliant stuff behind the scenes investing fortunes into the NHS, for instance, that we won’t feel the benefit of for a while - if so their communication is dire because even in the liberal press there are really no victories to celebrate.

I remember when Corbyn failed miserably, the very same people who defend Labour to the hilt because they’re Labour were doing exactly the same thing. Bury head in sand, blame the press, blame the electorate, everyone is brainwashed, everyone is secretly far right, everyone reads the Daily Mail, everyone is a gammon.

Sometimes things are just shit and that’s okay, recognising such doesn’t make anyone Hitler.
