Monkfish, although they are ugly bastards.

Well keep your eyes closed while you are eating it!

Seriously though....

Roast monkfish with crushed new potatoes, olive oil, balsamic vinegar & wilted watercress, bit of course crushed black pepper & some sea-salt flakes.......

A Rick Stein creation, before anyone asks.

Vegster much as I appreciate your comments I am told that there hasnt been a skate caught off the British coast, let alone Sussex, for at least 10 years from men whose living is fishing. I do not know you or what your occupation is but until proved different I would prefer to accept the view of a fisherman. The story about pollock was widely discussed on SCR, when it was, and if my memory serves me well the only supermarket that was going to change the description was Sainsbury's on the whims and fancies of the French to whom this is attributed.

I do fish regularly with rod and line and have put down the occasional lay-line too. I am pretty sure that anglers along the south coast occasionally catch palm size Thornback Ray and I'm pretty sure that ( I had one in June off the West Arm Shoreham) Common Skate are too. Some species, due to their feeding habits and range are more vulnerable than others to netting and this may well be the reason for the decline. I find it hard to believe that they have been totally wiped out for 10 years.

I've been mostly eating Rosada.

A white succulent flesh similar to cod but lots cheaper, I'm in Spain though. Spanish stores seem to have much bigger fish counters as their fishermen rape the seas for their bounty.

The amount that must get wasted is phenomenal as whenever I go to my local supermarket Mercadona the fish counter is full at the end of every day. It is pretty cheap here for fish though.
