It is unbelievable how rapid the decline of Neal Maupay has been, After a good debut season and some decent form after the lockdown break and even a reasonable start this season, whatever led up to the 'training ground bust up' appears to have removed all confidence from him.
Given Potter is meant to be a great man manager and specialise in dealing with 'conflict' - then the way some of our previously star players are declining is very alarming.

Oh whoopee.....the man is not a decisive spot kick taker. He is clearly unsure what to do every kick he takes. I honestly believe he changes his mind in the run-up. One kick he dinks it. Then he smashes it down the middle. Then he tries to place it, giving every indication to the keeper where its going. Or, he sends the keeper the wrong way but puts it wide of an empty net. It mirrors his volatile personality. Up and down, all over the place. On top of his game, looking sharp. Next minute, can't control the ball, can't pass it and makes all the wrong decisions infront of goal. He needs to be taken off these duties. He is going to miss as many as he scores.
He had just scored 2 in his last 2 games before last night (unless you count his 10 minutes against Arsenal, in which case it's 2 in 3). Before Newport he was starting to look better and more confident. Last night again proved that he really does rely on his confidence to play well. As soon as he drops his head he looks a fraction of the player we all know he can be..

I have voted ‘never,’not because of that one penalty but because I was 100 % certain he would miss. I guess he feels the same way. The amazing thing is that last nights effort wasn’t even the worst. Trossard, my goodness. !!!!
This. He gives me absolutely no confidence he will score from them.
And at the moment any confidence that he can pass to one of our players or shoot anywhere close to the goal either. What a sad decline this season. Not sure what the answer is but if we did have more strength in depth up front, maybe a rest from the side for a few weeks. He doesn't look right.

Perhaps then he can’t be that player. Mental toughness/resilience, whatever you want to call it, is a necessity for top sports people.

This. Fans moaned about Glen Murray taking penalties too.
His body language walking up to take that pen last night was utterly attrocious. Poor lad really looked like he didn't wanna be there. Hope he finds that fire and arrogance again that he had last season.
I was also thinking "please anyone but Trossard for the fifth". Underhit and overcomplicated everything, took too many touches all night.

But in the division we are in you need players who score nearly all of the time.
I don't what what Neal's record is but including shoot out's i'm guessing, it;s something like, scored 6, missed 4.

But the reason he shouldn't be taking them is less about that. He is visibly lacking in confidence.
He spends the match, as if in a dream.
He's not following in shots, he's not trying to run in behind.
There's no shortage of talent ... but his head isn't right. I've never seen it more clearly in a footballer
GP seems to be like the nurse at a primary school, there to comfort, but not help you achieve anything other than to stop crying and make sure the Head master doesn't have to call your mum.

I was expecting him to blast it down the middle again. When watching back, I can't but help think when he started his run up and had the split seconds pause, he changed his mind in what he was going to do. Always fatal on a penalty kick.
