when we're already 3 nil up
I feel like he's the new ashley barnes of penalties. Yeah, he's missed a couple, but he's scored a few as well, but people only remember the ones he misses.
It is unbelievable how rapid the decline of Neal Maupay has been, After a good debut season and some decent form after the lockdown break and even a reasonable start this season, whatever led up to the 'training ground bust up' appears to have removed all confidence from him.
Given Potter is meant to be a great man manager and specialise in dealing with 'conflict' - then the way some of our previously star players are declining is very alarming.
Yeah the "Maupay turned shit after the bust-up" / "Maupay turned shit after the missed penalty" theories are strong among those who are obsessing the Potter-out-stuff, conveniently ignoring that he had poor spells last season as well and that his two games before the "bust-up" were arguably his worst this season and that some of his recent performances have been pretty good. He is not declining, he is on a rollercoaster. Is that Potter fault? Maybe. Others would argue its Maupays fault.
Trossard was close to taking over from Harley for the worst Albion penalty ever.
For Maupay, he can take his next one when we are winning by at least 3 with not long left on the clock.

Only a 57% conversion rate for us in total including missing 2 out of his last 3. That's not great and especially when goals are so crucial to us when we're not taking our chances.
Barnes conversion rate for us was actually slightly better at 67% but the misses didn't feel as big as taking chances was obviously less of an issue then. As a comparison, Murray converted 77% of his penalties for us.
I don't think Maupay should be taking them, especially at the moment when for whatever reason he doesn't look right out there.
I was expecting him to blast it down the middle again. When watching back, I can't but help think when he started his run up and had the split seconds pause, he changed his mind in what he was going to do. Always fatal on a penalty kick.
Neal Maupay is not a bad player. His record in England tells us this in both the PL & Championship. In fact his debut season he was only 2 goals of Glenn Murray best ever PL scoring season so that should have been a good base to develop from. So I think we can rule out ability being the factor here. Of course he is playing for a 'bottom 6' team in the PL, and if he was 'a lot better' than this he would probably not be playing for Brighton.
So why can't Potter get more out of him? Why has Trossard declined significantly, yet still getting called up and played by Belgium who I think are ranked fairly well with FIFA at the moment? So many players look absolutely shot and devoid of confidence on the pitch
Not all bad - because Solly March is clearly thriving off the coaching and system he is playing in, but there are more players going backwards than forwards at the moment and that does lie with the head coach.
Maupay had never scored 10 goals before Potter and Trossard had never made a cap for Belgium before Potter - yet those two reasons are why GP is at fault for them "not performing"?
I dont think any players are going backwards ability wise. Confidence wise they are not in a good state, which is what I believe to be the main cause of their sometimes lacklustre performances.
How do Pascal Tomer and Bobby’s stats stand up In comparison

Does it matter what the cause is?
Whatever is making them play badly, they are playing badly. This isn't just for a game or two, this has been going on for the whole season
The manager either has to improve their confidence or ability (which he clearly isn't doing) or bring in other players who can do the job.
