I have just noticed from cricinfo that both Pietersen and Cook are averaging over 49 in Test cricket.

I wonder how long it will be before either of their batting averages creep over the 50 mark?
Answering my own question, KP will be over 50 if he is not out having scored another 14 runs (77 not out) and Cook needs another 107 to take him to 258 not out.

Cook best batsman of the decade, a testament to the patience shown in him i reckon. This match could be over within 3 days.

India just look like they want to go home. Totally defeated.

Even Ravi Bopara must be feeling he can get runs against this Indian attack. Then again....

a lead of 232 with 3 days and 7 wickets left on a pitch starting to turn all ready? I think India will win this one!!!!!!

What is worrying (and was discussed on TMS) is that the Indians genuinely don't seem to give a toss.

I predict that the IPL means that there will be the Ashes and virtually nothing else in the way of Test Cricket in 10 years time.

South Africa are still a very proud test playing nation

I did say VIRTUALLY nothing else but the Ashes - still pretty poor if only 3 countries aspire to the highest level of the game?

could have a summer round robin of England, Australia, and SA, starting in May and going through to July with a one day series Aug and Sep, a league basis!! I may be onto something here

Not sure what the weather is like in the midlands, but a big day for England today, push on with the bat for another 2 sessions, taking the lead to over 450 and then stick them back and wrap this up by tommorow lunch.

BBC says cloudy with rain at 7pm.

We have enough in the tank to declare at lunchtime - but I hope we don't.

Let Cook get his triple ton, and/or England get to 700, then declare. If Strauss felt like it, England could go on to break all sorts of records today. I hope that happens.

The problem with Test cricket has always been that people cannot afford the time to watch a five day test match - especially in poorer countries where if you're not working, you won't get paid. With T20, you watch an entire game in an evening.

It's hard to know how to ensure Test cricket (which requires more patience, attrition, concentration and relies less on good fortune) remains the pinnacle in the eyes of the public, but it should surely be the case that T20 subsidises 4 and 5 day cricket to allow the development of Test standard players.

That's why, if I had my way, I'd abandon all forms of domestic cricket except 4 day cricket and T20 (which I'd expand) - and ensure that selectors only ever looked at 4 day matches when deciding who to pick for test match cricket.

I'd agree with all of that if the weather forecast wasn't so threatening.
