I was persuaded by a group of "friends" who'd hired a minibus to see Rainbow with Graham Bonnet at Bingley Hall in Stafford (for the uninitiated it's basically a corrugated iron shed with a concrete floor). Even worse, if that's possible, the support band was Samson, whose drummer wore a rapists mask - nice.

Please clarify!

was this a mask he got from a rapist?

Or a mask as used by a rapist; I didn't know they had designer masks?

Or a mask with a face of a rapist, in which case who????

billy bragg in london had a bust up with the growler, turned into a race back to brighton tube, train, taxi from brighton station:eek:follow that cab:angry:Got in first so not to be locked out! Too soft to lock her out:facepalm: big mistake.
Also erasure brighton centre managed to drown out the band with the argument:catfight:

Can imagine their hard-core following tutting into the back of their hands

I saw Rainbow with Graham Bonnet at the Brighton centre. Big disappointment was they were only on for 65 mins and moody Blackmore wouldn't do an encore. Almost a rip-off except for the late great Cozy Powell.

No, I am sure they were the headline act, probably on something like the Wheels of Steel tour.

Was that at The Centre? I saw them twice at The Dome late eighties, with a big lit eagle descending both times for 'The Eagle Has Landed'! Classic! Saw them last year I think it was in London and they were truly outstanding...

Saw a sixties tribute band at the Great British Beerfest a few years back who called themselves "The Animals and Friends". It turned out ONE of them had appeared with the Animals some time after the great Burton/Price/Chandler days.
They were diabolical, I cried into my pint. But on the other hand they were free.
The best tribute band i saw playing there one year was T-Rextasy, fantastic. The "Bolan" lead singer wore Marc's own clothes.

I did worse at the Great British Beerfest at the Brighton Centre some years back. With drink taken, decided it would be a good idea to do a Basil Fawlty Goosestep March right in front of the German Oompah Band. Turns out they weren't a hastily cobbled together band of local musos doing it for beer money, they were from Bavaria

I witnessed a terrible performance by the Stone Roses headlining at Reading and as a consequence missed seeing Underworld in the Dance Tent. Ian Brown didn't hit a single note.

Were you thrown out then from the beerkeller? GBBF at Brighton, that's going back to the 1980's I think.

Nope, wasn't chucked out. Though if I'd realised I was horribly insulting the foreign guest musicians I would probably have chucked meself out

Mind you, I reckon they put something in the beer in those days. If memory serves, the following year there was a major Beerfest at Hove Town Hall and some poor bugger somehow managed to topple over the upstairs balcony and kill himself about five minutes after the thing opened. Anybody remember that one?

talking earlier of tribute bands....saw the Illegal Eagles at the Triangle in Burgess Hill and they were bloody incredible.

The lead guitarists were extremely accurate, and the harmonies were bang on!!!

No but some mates of mine might have been behind the bar that year. They started at GBBF in the mid-1980;s but retired after the first year it transferred from Olympia to Earls Court. I helped at every Olympia event, but like them felt Earls Court was just too much for volunteer staff, the numbers jumped from 40,000 over 5 days to over 70,000 I think. and it got very "Corporatey".
