I'm reading Auschwitz by Laurence Rees, for the second time. Absolutely great book, never becomes too harrowing to read, despite the obvious nature of the events it refers to.

I have read that book. If you don't have it, get the DVD of the BBC series. Last year, I went to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Going through the iconic gateway to Auschwitz (with its "Arbeit Macht Frei" legend) and watchtower at Birkenau was an experience that I won't forget in a hurry.

Reading some of the Inspector Morse books. For once,I think the telly does it better.

I agree with that assessment.

The two Morses (the book Morse and the film Morse) have in common a love of Wagner's music, real ale, crosswords and women, though the book Morse is darker and has a weakness for pornography. The book Lewis is something of a halfwit.

For a few years, I lived a few doors away from Colin Dexter. I used to have a drink with him in the Dew Drop. When I told him that I was a writer, he invited me to his house. It is spartan by anyone's standards. I don't know what he's spent his money on. He read some of my work and gave me his opinion.

Last September, in the Turf Tavern, I had a chat with Kevin Whately. An episode of Lewis was being filmed. I talked a lot about John Thaw and The Sweeney.

I don't mean to drop names. Never name-drop. Mick Jagger told me that.

Meanwhile, I have been reading The Six Wives of Henry VIII for about 3 months: historically fascinating but quite a heavy read.

I really enjoyed that but you're right, it's quite heavy and takes some time. That Anne Boleyn sounds a right twat ... got what she deserved!:lolol:

I've recently read the first 2 books in the Age Of The Five trilogy by Trudi Canavan and really enjoyed them. Currently trying to read Mein Kampf but again it's heavy going.

Recommend "The 5 people you meet in Heaven" and "For One More Day" by Mitch Albom and "Great Footballers : Bowles";)

The Damned United

Finally finished this book - highly recommended!

Just to remind everybody it is a fictionalised account of the turbulent 44 day reign of Brian Clough at Leeds United, a team he hated (...so what's new!). The Albion also feature as there are extensive flashbacks showing the events that shaped the life of this complex character.

..Hope the author (David Peace) does another volume covering the Forest years!

Just to kick start this thread again perhaps.....

Today finished "Greetings from Bury Park", the autobiography of journalist and broadcaster Sarfraz Manzoor.

An interesting and enlightening account of what it is like to have been brought up in a Muslim community in England (Bury Park being a suburb of Luton) in the 70's and 80's.

Certainly challenged some stereotypes for me - with the encouragement of his best mate (a Sikh) the author became a fanatical follower of Bruce Springsteen. Whilst "The Boss" is an artist who I believe you either love or hate (I fall into the first category) the book is worth a read for non fans as well.

Nowt to do with footie but a good read.
