Wetherspoons in Burgess Hill

Wife and I were in Jacobs Post, having a coffee, this morning and a chap was saying that Wetherspoons have taken the closed bar that was called Fusion but they are not taking over and doing any conversions until after Christmas, anybody else heard this. In fairness the same person told me a couple of weeks ago that he caught a 30lb Cod on a rod and line off of Eastbourne so who knows.

That's actually incorrect as they have applied for change of use to a public house for the old currys shop and the old Sussex stationers next door. In this weeks planning applications in The Middy.
Also on Council planning website with diagrams of proposed changes.

The chap obviously had heard something but got his facts wrong, which is not surprising, At least they may not be refused by people with a vested interest as sadly happened in Haywards Heath.

They actually had the permissions for the priory in haywards Heath but decided not to proceed due to the amount of money needed to bring the building up to standard, it had nothing to do with any other parties. You've mentioned that before on here just wondered where you get your facts from and exactly what they ?

Shame all the decent pubs are being demolished and the town centre is just becoming pub-crawl central.

I wrote to Haywards Heath Borough Council who in turn referred me to Mid Sussex Council being the authority responsible who wrote back saying that due to the number of objections raised by councilors about customers in transit from The Priory to the bars Wetherspoons had withdrawn their application. In their letter there was no mention of objections from residents only Councillors.

I thought there were objections from people in Franklyn Rd ?
Shame really, whatever happened, as I think it would have made a good venue and something that end of town could do with after the closure of The Sussex and The Duck.

That surprises me greatly because when I worked for Tim Martin as his stocktaker when he started Wetherspoons he told me personally that they allowed £1m for set up costs including conversion and didn't expect to get a return on their investment for 8 - 10 years. His first pub was Martins in Muswell Hill which he took in partnership with a friend from Uni Andtrew Marler they then split up and Andrew bought a pub which he called Marlers which was in Highgate. Tim then bought a pub in Stoke Newington, if memory is good it was Coach & Horses and this was the start of Wetherspons.

I'd certainly heard that their first pub was Muswell Hill. That came from a local in 1994 when I was working in the Maid of Muswell on Alexandra Park Road.

Fascinating insight into the beginnings of a journey that would culminate in the famous FULL ENGLISH at the CLIFTONVILLE
