At the risk of re-opening the debate, I have to say that I'm glad it's gone. I couldn't bear to think of millions of pounds being spent on something that no-one would bother going to ie another Victorian pier, away from the main station-sea drag. If they had come up with something new and exciting that would have been fine.

A shame that the crooks in charge of the Palace Pier will have won though.

I'm sorry Lush I disagree.

I have memories of it being the better pier of the two and given the choice would always opt for the West pier.

It was a walk that people did, going from one to the other.

The pier would've rejuvenated that part of the seafront, moving the tourist area to the west. With the idea of a tram link to the marina it would have been terrific.

Shame on Brighton and Hove Council and the Lottery fund

Who give a feck about that stuipid eyesore! Look to the future is what I say, not the ugly past!

Agreed. It had its' time, it WAS a historic structure and now it's time to demolish it.

Loved it back then, but that was then and this is now.
Let's stop stringing it out like a bad marriage, and divorce it asap.

christ. they should have resolved this in the 70s! it shut in 1975. had the council taken it over then, how much would have it cost? a huge fraction of what it was estimated at during the end of the 90s.
Its gone now it seems, well ever since December 2002 storms really, but it was a real shame then. Even up to then, in its derelict state, it was a powerful image, envoking so many different thoughts. It should be a warning to Brightoners, thats what happens if Crooks and NIMBYs win
I'm not just talking about the football club, but all other developments around brighton, e.g: king alfred

Agree with you on both counts Lush. I seriously don't believe it was ever going to end up being restored, either to it's former glory or as a new development. It was becoming a bit of an embarassment to the town.

I remember going on it when smaller but if you don't look after things by the sea the elements will have their say.

Sad loss but inevitable given the clear lack of agreement on a way forward.

If you ask me, the eyesore is that tacky piece of chav shite known as the Brighton Pier (or more appropriately, the Palace Pier).

The West Pier was a beautiful structure that could have been rebuilt with a touch of class. Serious mismanagment has deprived the town of the only grade 1 listed pier in the world. :censored:

This building is WORLD famous. I was in Australia when it first started falling into the sea and it made the six o'clock news over there. What a waste.
