Caroline Lucas won with about an 8% swing and and increased share of the vote of about 7% of a 70% turnout. Thats not an overall majority, its not a safe seat either.

Most of that swing came from Labour, a swing back to labour half as big would oust Lucas, any Libdems defecting could go to Labour.

You are talking 600ish votes here, for the tories to overtake Lucas would require a bigger drop of 4,000.

You evidently didn't look at the proposed map of the new constituency which, as Is adi earlier, is solidly Green at present. You're not comparing like with like.

What is this point about a 'swing back to Labour?' Where is that going to come from? If the Greens have their own solid vote, and it's growing - why should they 'swing back to Labour'? Yes, any LibDem could go defecting to Labour. They could also go defecting to the Tories. Or the Greens, which has been happening.

Exactly how many students are there at the 2 universities? 50,000 combined? If 80% Live outside the constiuency and student voting patterns are skewed towards Labour and the greens it really wouldn't take much to dump the Watermelon out on her arse.

Also, perhaps you missed the point about the student vote. One there's about 25,000 students at the universities - two you're assuming they've all reigstered to vote and three - you still don't know which way they're voting. Typecasting them as Labour or Green voters without any evidence doesn't help your argument.

Probably not. The most likley outcome is labour to oust Lucas, the tories would need a significant drop in student votes in that ward if there are a lot of students living there that is.

Article in the Economist? Was that a national poll or did that account for the strong Green presence in the city of Brighton & Hove? The LibDem vote in Brighton & Hove is pitifully small (3.4% in the Brighton Pavilion area at the last Council Election).

As for the popularity of the Green vote - the reason in Brighton is they say they have worked hard here. When I asked that surely they do that elsewhere, they say it's the nature of the people down here. f***ing lefties and tree-huggers etc.

As for evidence for the popularity itself, the most recent marker is the 2011 Council Elections. While I accept that the voting patterns can be different for Council election than they are for General Elections, it would take a WILD swing for the Green Party to lose the new Brighton Pavilion & Hove constituency. The vote in the 2011 Council Elections in the wards which would make up the new constituency were...
