This isn't discussed a whole lot on here but for me it is an issue that permiates through many political things we discuss.

Interesting video about the wealth of our good mates Donnie and Elon.

And yet the majority of American voters think those ultra rich people will make it better for those with less than the grain of rice (US$200,000) because "they just feel like they can make things better." Talk about fools!!

“The world’s richest 1% have already used up their fair share of the global carbon budget for 2025, just 10 days into the year.

In less than a week and a half, the consumption habits of an individual from this monied elite had already caused, on average, 2.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, according to analysis by Oxfam GB. It would take someone from the poorest 50% of humanity three years to create the same amount of pollution”.

I liked one of the comments about money being like manure, pile it all in one place and it stinks. Spread it around and it makes thing grow.

Elon will have the rest of us live in The Silo, whilst he parties with Trump in Mar-a-Lago.

Actually.. now I think about it that Silo living doesn’t sound so bad.

Let’s be honest, we’ve voted that way for years until this recent election. And it took f*** up after f*** up from the Tories to stop it from happening.

Don't forget the 'American Dream'. Said by those will plenty and easily swallowed by many with little.

usefully also shows the misunderstanding of wealth. most wealth isn't piles of money, it's assets and investments, those things that grow.

And according to many, including some on this board, because the current government hasn't sorted everything out within a couple of months, we'll be voting that way again at the next election.

Do you think it would be possible to ration carbon usage on an individual level?

Once you've used your personal quota, you have to pay to buy more carbon credits and this excess carbon tax is used for <insert worthy cause here>.

Oooh, just imagine ....

There's an odd mindset that thinks "They've managed their wealth very well so they've be good at managing ours" when in reality what the wealthy are actually good at is making other peoples money their own.

This is something I've long beleived, that everyone should get a "carbon allowance". This would mean you could have a foreign holiday flight or run a big car but go over and you pay tax on the extra.

But people need considerable wealth to acquire assets and investments - which then generate more wealth.

Indeed. A question on the ever informative 'The Chase' indicated that a mere 8% of the World's wealth was in cash.

The problem of excess wealth, and the problems created by inequality are not really about assets or money. It's about inequality of power. As we are seeing, inequality is destroying democracy. And the planet.

Give everyone a certain number of carbon credits annually, then set up a trading platform to allow them to be freely traded, with the proceeds immediately taxed. Seller gains, treasury gains, wealth is redistributed and those who want to burn more have to pay for it.

They’d do what companies do and sell their unused quota to companies that want more. So net carbon doesn’t lessen, it just gets redistributed.

I wait to be flamed for this but that's a really strange article. I'm no climate change denier but the 1% totals 77 million people according to that article having based it on people earning £110k a year. That is a healthy salary no doubt but it's nowhere near Private Jet levels that it then goes on to reference for Bezos etc. I'd love to know how they worked it all out and are seeming to berate people for having a bit of money and using aircon.

And because Labour has not instantly fixed the hospital waiting lists and made us all richer while cutting taxes, millions are already clamouring to do so again.
