It's unbelievable that people think this is a weak squad!! I think that last season on paper we had the strongest squad in Div2. Before Coppell left I was convinced we were goign to waltz the division. True, the squad hasn't changed much since then plus we've lost Blackwell, Rodger and Piercy (who didn't play that much anyway). But Currie's more than made up for it.
Kuipers is playign better now than any keeper since Eric Steele! Harding, Virgo, Knight, Nicholas and El Abd have real potential. Hardign and Hinshelwood could go that way too... also possibly McPhee, Jarrett and Robinson.
It's not a weak squad IT'S A YOUNG ONE!!! With masses of potential. If we can keep the young 'uns (and that's a BIG 'if') we have the makings of a really great team... which cost us peanuts.
Whether it keeps us up is another matter...
I think the point was (the point I was making anyway) strength in depth. Losing 3 senior players has left our squad wafer thin. I fully agree with your sentiments about the named players - the problem is there is nothing behind them. I can't help wondering if we would have been better off staying down and allowing these young players to develop without the pressure they are currently under. Everything was fine when we were winning. I made the point ages ago that as soon as we lost a few games, people would start clammering for loan players which will do the confidence of those dropped no good at all. We have the most promising bunch of young players I have seen in my 25 years of watching. I only hope they are allowed to fully develop and not get mullered by fans who are demanding survival. For me, survival was always a long shot.
Upshot - we need a striker badly but may not be able to afford one. Get over it whiners. Nobody is happy with the situation - including the board - but unless you have found a money plant then it ain't going to change until the Falmer decision.
