I hated the place when I went, horizontal rain, even the penguins stand with their backs to the wind! I'm guessing the documentaries of which are very interesting were filmed in the summer!

i really liked it when i went. the people have a real sense of togetherness. pretty bleak in winter but the same can be said about much of this country.

I haven't seen it as I don't have an advanced telly box, but will hope to see some of the stuff coming up on terrestrial.

Aside from that...

http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/loca...to_carve_falklands_heros_name_on_memorial.php

"Old soldiers have condemned a council for declining to carve the name of a Falklands hero on a war memorial.

On Monday The Argus reported how the family of paratrooper Steve Prior wanted his name inscribed on the memorial in Old Steine, Brighton, to mark the 25th anniversary of the conflict.

But they had been rebuffed by the former Brighton Council in the 1980s and had no success with its successor, Brighton and Hove City Council, today."

They are refusing on the grounds that the War Memorial is a listed building and it is highly unlikely they would get permission to carve the name.

I will be bombarding the council with emails and I would urge you to do the same.

I used to work with Steve Prior's brother (not the one mentioned in the Argus story) and find the attitude of the Council incredible.

I was no supporter of Thatcher's adventure in the South Atlantic, but am happy to respect the memory of those who fought.

My brother was serving in the Royal Navy at the time and I know that our family was very relieved when he got posted to Scotland in 1982, rather than being sent to the Falklands.

It is incredulous. Obviously, I don't know the ins and outs of their correspondances, but I would imagine common decency should prevail. It is not as if it is a case of 'If we do it for them, then we will have to do it for everybody'. It is not as if we lose many of our 'townfolk' in action.

Perhaps a petition is in order, Lord B. NSC has proven to be a powerful vehicle in the past!

Ps About the only time Scotland would be preferable to Argentina (In the loosest possible sense). The ladies over there....

I fell in love with Maggie Thatcher during the re-claiming of the Falklands.

Some tin pot reporter questioned her on the steps of Downing Street trying to make her look small.

'Rejoice,Rejoice' she said before stepping into her car. :)

No wonder she said rejoice. Our troops had to fight to reverse her inept policies which led to the Argentinian invasion in the first place. They, the troops, were professional and did their job well.Sadly a foreign excursion lengthened those dire Thatcher years, and the misery of Conservative governments.

Well done the Armed Forces, but I think those Islas will inevitably be Malvinas in the end.

Phil Stant left the Army to play for Hereford. That was the closest team to the Regimental HQ.

The guy was SAS for chrissakes!

Friend of mine has been getting some coverage lately. Guy called Neil Grose, 3 Para on Mt Longdon. Died on his 17th birthday along with two others who never saw their 18th birthday. Ironically, they were too young to be sent to Northern Ireland. :glare:
