The Muslim Brotherhood were encouraged by the CIA and other western agencies as a counter to Nasser's pan-arabism and active socialist groups across the Middle East in much the same way as they also supported them in Afghanistan in the 1970's and 80's.

The original Palestine Manadate has been formally divided twice. Once after WW1 to create Trans-Jordan (now HK Jordan) and then in 1948. UN resolution 181 http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/un/res181.htm created a division of the latter Mandate in two states but included a notional number of non-resident Jews to calculate the populations of the two states which thus over-estimate the Jewish population at the expense of the arabs.
