It is good to debate things politely though isn’t it? Without reverting to disgraceful comments about my 83 year old mother Or my wife being raped by one of your colleagues.

The strangest thing about this thread is the number of people who think that objects like railcards, NI cards and NHS cards are photo ID. (shakes head in wonder)

And there's no guarantee that having photo ID will always be accepted. I have a press card with my photo on it and yet I've had banks and mobile phone companies not recognise it.

I do wonder whether it's a precursor to the idea of national identity cards.

Bus passes have photos but aren't accepted as ID.

Important to note that the wording here is incorrect.

There was 592 cases of electoral fraud in 2019, of which the majority (54%) were breaches in relation to campaigning.

There was actually only 142 cases of alleged voter fraud across all elections. Only 14 cases resulted in any action being taken (9.8%) with 91.2% of cases either resulting in no further action or being locally resolved.

It is such a non-issue it is insane.

I agree, but we can guess what the Government's line or defence will be: "These figures grossly underestimate the extent of the problem There are very few prosecutions because the vast majority of cases of electoral fraud are not being detected precisely because of the absence of Voter Identification, and because those evil fraudulent Lefties are so damn devious. We have good reason to believe that this problem is widespread, but hidden because the perpetrators are so cunning. Innocent voters will have nothing to fear. In fact they should welcome this initiative."

Of course, I'm not remotely suggesting that the Tories are entirely predictable in their duplicity

Agreed, we probably don't need it.

Just another way of the Tories introducing national ID cards via the backdoor.

No, it's not just another Tory plot - it's already happened. People who don't have a passport or a photo driving licence (and there are many law-abiding people who come into that category) are already barred from many perfectly legal activities - selling a car to a dealer; going on an aeroplane (for internal flights - obvs. passport needed if you're going abroad); watching football at The Amex when spectators are allowed back in. Prbably quote a few more things - I just haven't come across them yet.

It's a solution to a virtually non existent problem but feeds into the right wing populist narrative that 'they' are coming and stealing the election (although 'they' could have done a better job of it in the last four GE).

As a minimum free photo IDs need to be issued to everyone who asks for one.

From my experience working as a poll clerk, I can confirm that the most insufferable bores on the whole electoral roll are those that take the opportunity to drone on about voter ID at a polling station. On getting to the front of the queue they'll: make a hilarious joke about how they could be anyone, explain why you should be IDing them and then feign shock that someone hadn't come in and voted for them earlier in the day.

Making it harder for the disenfranchised ,the marginalised and the poor of all political persuasions to vote.

Voter fraud happens in such low numbers I can't help but think its a political decision.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of voter registration and FPTP, this is the type of attitude recently displayed by Donald Trump. Our system of democratic elections is a fragile concept, easily undermined but best defended.

I don’t have a view on changes to voter registration. There is merit in the arguments concerning both disenfranchisement and fraud. Very much in favour of National ID cards though. Having lived in two countries with these it just makes life a lot easier when it comes to proof of identity and even accessing health care.
