Agreed not the same player since he has come back...way off the pace today

I'll go along with that.

I was surprised that Painter came straight in last week - and that McNulty was left out - but having watched Jim today, I think Painter will be back in on Tuesday.

Ok, he was playing against good players, but doesn't seem quite the player he was - yet. I sure it will come - he IS a class act.

Kuipers 6 His kicking was attrocious and put our defence under constant pressure.
Calderon 7 Good performance but tired near the end.
Virgo 8 MOM very timely tackles and interceptions.
Elphick 6 Totally at fault for first goal as he had no need to tackle or dive in Not an inspiring performance but redeemed a little by scoring a goal.
McNulty 5 Poor game allowed Young too much room.
Bennett 5 Poor game contributed nothing ion attack or defence.
Croft 6 Completely overrun in midfield
Dicker 6 See Croft
Navarro 6 See Croft and Dicker.
Murray 7 Plenty of effort and nice touches.
Forster 5 One of his poorest games ever for us as he never got going and looked his age.

Subs:

Carole 6 some nice touches when he came on
Cox 6 Great improvement on what had gone before him
Dickinson 5 Did nothing of note

Overall we were lucky to only lose by 1 goal and the score line flattered us. We were out played, as would be expected, out fought for 50/50 balls and a yard too slow in thought and deed again as would be expected against a Prem side. Villa were never stretched but I wouldnt hold for their chances if Freidell was injured or suspended.

None the less a great day out and the score was better than I thought as I predicted we would lose 3 - 1

SO... what game were YOU watching? Obviously you thought we were going to win the match? Considering who we were playing and some of the players in it, our midfield looked to have he better of it for much of bthe match.

Sorry, I've missed something here. But then it is the same every week. Goalkeeper's rating (whoever it is) based primarily on kicking? Positioning first, organisation of defence second, command of box third, saves fourth, crosses fifth. Kicking a very dim and distant sixth, possibly.

I dont understand some of the marks on here for Dicker. The bloke was superb until he went off, everything went through him in the first half.Absolute quality player.

Here goes:

Kuipers - 7 or 8 - good kicking, great save second half, possibly could have done more re first goal - too far to right of goal for their third

Calderon - 7 - looked good
Elphick 8 - decent game, in good position to score equaliser
Virgo - 6 - only one that played hoof ball
McNulty 7 - did well up against pace

Bennett - 5 or 6 - quiet game
Crofts - very good - 8 - never gave up
Navarro - first time I've seen him - did ok - 6
Dicker - 6 - gave ball away cheaply about 30 sec in, lead to pressure they scored their first from

Murray - 7 - good game, should have done better when twice one on one with their goalie - hit row z in holte end each time
Forster - 9 - man of match for me, didn't stop running, great football brain

Subs

Dickinson - 6 - not physical enough at times to retain posession
Carole - 7 - surprisingly good, forced good save from their keeper
Cox - 8 - wanted the ball, did well down the right, out to prove a point to Gus

Are you taking the piss?

Dicker is quality, thing I object to is him being stuck out on the left. He is far more effective running things from the middle but Poyet seems to like this lop sided midfield, really not a fan myself. Lets hope we sign a left footed left sided midfield player before the end of the month.

I think a few people are being a bit harsh with ratings. We were playing one of the top clubs in the ENTIRE country!

I thought we were absolutely fantastic, especially first half. Very assured passing and some genuinely dangerous moves at the end of them. First half scoreline of 1-1 was completely correct and did not flatter us in the slightest.

Second half Villa stepped it up as to be expected and at around 70 mins you should see the difference in fitness between the teams, you could also tell at that stage that Villa were used to playing on pitches that size, and we weren't.

Brighton should be very proud of that performance. We will kick on from here.

Unfortunately, two of the three Villa goals could be put down to him, though. Dwelt on the ball just inside our half and was robbed for their first and too slow to get to a ball that must have been 60-40 in his favour to start off with for their third.

Not when most of the opposition attacks came from poor aimless kicks down their central dfenders throats that they were able tocollect and give to their midfield to start another attack, thus putting our defence under constant pressure.

Given the fact that we were playing a top 7 prem team who have just knocked 6 past blackburn:

Kuipers 7 - looked from row JJ like 2 point blank saves, come on didn't really stand a chance first goal and can only remember one dodgy kick
Calderon -8 MOM looks a class act (and he hasn't played for ages)
Virgs -7 great first half - yes dome hoofs but isn't that a good idea against prem ? we were not going to out football them for 90 mins.
Elph 7 - solid
Jimmy 6 (at fault for goal no.1 but only because they have pace and skill in abundance)
Dicker 7 looked solid and rarely gave ball away
Navarro 7 best game in an albion shirt
Bennett 6 a little quiet
Forster 6 again quiet - had time in first half when clear
Murray 7 worked hard - good touches - should have scored first half

Maybe a little generous but I thought we matched them first half - the difference was the pace and skill on the counter (I think they looked shoddy at the back though)
P.S. heard a few people saying we let in soft goals - with the pace of young , delph , milner et al most prem teams would have conceded those goals. Well done to Gus for giving it a go. Great day out !

Kuipers - 8 - Amazing second half save, seemed to slip when trying to dive for their third goal.

Calderon - 7 - Solid, good going forward and backwards
Virgo - 7 - A few mistakes and a few silly hoofs but other than that, Solid.
Elphick - 8 - Super game, dominated in the air and looked at home.
McNulty - 5 - Very poor imo, got skinned every single time and was badly out of position for their third goal.

Bennett - 6 - Didn't get the ball much but did ok when he got it
Navarro - 7 - I'm warming to this guy, broke up play well and passed the ball simply, made a few woeful tackles in the first half.
Crofts - 7 - Did the simple stuff well, kept the ball moving.
Dicker - 6 - Absolutely ABYSMAL first half, lost the ball countless times, slightly better second half.

Murray - 9 - Caused the Villa defence utter hell, one of his best displays imo, deserved a goal.
Forster - 7 - Fairly quiet but got his goal as always, superb finish.

Dickinson - 7 -
Carole - 7 -
Cox - 6 -

f***ing hell hurstpierpoint, where were you sitting to give scores like that?

Have you ever watched a) football, or b) us playing football before?

If that's your view of events can I suggest you save your fingers and keyboard?!!!

Kuipers-7 Other than the fumble within the first few minutes had a fairly solid game, with 2 brilliant second half saves to keep us in the match

Calderon-6 Decent game, Couldn't expect him to work miracles against attacks such as Villa's and got caught out a few times but their class showed today

Elphick-7 Got the equalising goal, and maybe should have done better for Villas second when you compare his size to Ashley Young but solid match from Tommy

Virgo-8 stood out right from the start for me, didn't put a foot wrong top job!!

McNulty-5 Has to take blame for the first goal as very clumsily gave away possesion to allow albrighton to burst through. got caught out a lot today but they are higher division.

Benett-6 Didn't stand out really today, and other than his tracking back I thought he did ok

Crofts-6 A quite game for The skipper but can't say anything negative about his performance

Navvaro-7 Good performance from him, hardly put a foot wrong with passing

Dicker-7 Top performance from Gary, ran the show with him fooling the Villa players countless times with his faking, but less of the flashy backheels as they didn't work out

Forster-7 Great performance from Nicky, whilst he couldn't always keep up with the pace of the Villa players for being at the twilight of his career he bloody well worked his socks off and a great finish for the goal.

Murray-9 MOM, Won header after header against their defence, was unlucky to miss a couple of crosses by mere inches, and was outstanding.

subs:

Dickinson-5 didn't really see much from him but got up well to win some headers

Carole-6 looked lively, and found space at times on the left however the ball never seemed to get to him

Cox-6

a bloody great performance from the lads today. Proud of them all!!

Brighton and Hove Albion: 10

Each player prolly deserved about a 7/8 Apart from Fozzy who had arguably one of his worst games for us. 6.

We were given a treat though. And I would have taken 4/5-1. I just wanted us to score and to give a good performance. I think we did that. No shame in playing how we did and loosing to villa!
