UK rap is getting quite big internationally of late. Quite like a lot of it. Whilst looking for stuff from Santan Dave, came across this.. Never seen it before. UK rappers playing for the Santan cup at Lancing. Don Strapzy, Stormzy, Krept Konan, Ramz, Santan Dave, Avelino

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWNhqMOJAN0

I posted the video when it came out but I don’t think the thread got much traction. Actually I might not have even started a thread. I watch SE Dons quite often so it was nice to see them invited to the Santan Cup despite not really fitting the mould.

For those who don’t know; SE Dons are one of a handful of clubs who might genuinely be saving Sunday League football in this country.

They upload all their games to YouTube and in turn have inspired a lot of young people to go and start their own Sunday League teams. In fact there’s now a BN Dons in Southwick (wow this thread goes full circle). They quite often pull in 300,000 viewers per game; have broken the 1,000,000 view barrier once & had over 2000 paying fans turn up for their two most recent cup finals. Declan Rice & Junior Stanislas go to their games & they even turned over a team featuring Bradley Dack a few years ago. Oh and if you want a Brighton connection, their top striker is Zach Ansan who is the son of Andy Ansah who played for us on loan in the 90s.

It doesn’t take a genius to see why current rap music and it’s gang culture is being pushed...unless you don’t live here.

Sorry if it hurts your feelings, but I don’t want to bring kids up to sound like a gangster from south London because that’s all they get spoon fed by Radio 1.

Im guessing you don’t listen to much current rap music, or listen to Radio 1 because these points are both massively wide of the mark.

Also just to further rubbish your point about rap promoting gang culture being pushed; there’s an entire sub genre of U.K. Hip-Hop that is largely about gang culture. It’s banned from radio stations & the Met Police are getting YouTube to delete hundreds of videos. Doesn’t seem like the best way to push it to me.

I see Krept and Konan mentioned in the OP, I thought I would look them up as I'm not familiar with this type of ' music '

That’s a remix of a song by another rapper; although you’re correct that lyrically it does fall in to a lot of the normal hip-hop tropes. However it’s worth digging a little deeper in to Krept & Konan to get the full picture. They’ve came from a pretty rough estate, in fact Konan saw his step-dad shot dead in front of him whilst he was trying to protect him.

They could have very easily became another statistic and ended up in jail or dead, but have instead became Guinness World Record Holders, have a pretty successful music career, host their own TV show, have opened their own restaurant & even started their own foundation to help young kids from their area use music/film/art as a way to escape the cycle of gang violence.

There is a lot of good UK rap out at the moment. You’re just demonstrating your ignorance in music and most things social. Have you cared to talk to these evil beasts?

Would they understand what he says or are they bilingual?

English and pseudo West Indian/ American?

Why do we need to "nip it in the bud"? Non-hispanic whites are now a minority in California and they're doing alright. I'd rather have some tacos or a decent Korean meal than a burger anyway.

I know what you mean about adverts, they love a mixed race couple. Companies want to show they are modern and diverse. I don't find it that strange though- just thinking about my old school mates who i'm in a whatsapp group with, over half are in mixed-race relationships.

Sweet

Must admit I don’t really consider rap as music . I feel it is just for people that can talk fast but can’t hold a melody for a song . I also find often although not always rap seems to sound aggressive, with derogatory words about women and various swear words and other offensive words like the N word.

Not for me , I’d never let my kids listen to this sort of noise .

Always find this viewpoint bizarre.

They’re probably isn’t a genre of music out there right now that is talking about as many ‘real’ issues as hip-hop in the U.K.

Obviously there are shallow/surface level songs, the same as any genre. But there’s an absolute glut of rappers releasing either extremely personal tracks or holding the mirror up to larger societal issues. I suppose we can boil that down to “they say rude words lol” though.

Thanks for the information, I didn't know about SE Dons, nice to hear about that about Sunday League.

I remember when we signed Andy Ansah, I will never forget the headline on the back page of The Argus-
Is Andy the Ansah?
Sadly I don't think he was, as the Argus headline is the only thing I remember about him.

Also nice to read something positive about what Krept & Konan are doing, fair play to them.

... you seem a bit threatened by a tune. Which part of it upset you? ie which part of it did you consider not true?

You clearly don’t watch Question Time, as the ‘letterbox’ thing was explained and it wasn’t racist.

The video clearly shows the two black gentleman not putting their hands out to shake his, maybe they were the racist ones.

Not threatened by a tune, I just think it’s a load of victim hood/make white people feel guilty bollocks. Like I said, it’s easy to see why the BBC push it and why it has got a global following now.

The old ‘let’s destroy our culture and heritage for a bit of good food’ argument.

So, a white man and a white woman being together isn’t modern? Why would they think diverse is better? Why do they need to show they are diverse?

Isn’t the black population something like 13%? It seems strange that the adverts massively over represent them.

I’ve heard Radio 1 and it’s utter shite, I also have listen to the Now albums when I get into my sister’s car. I remember one of the CD’s was exclusively rap/grime. They push it because they are trying to get rid of British pop music.

I know artists who write and record brilliant songs, so much better than what you hear on Radio 1, yet they won’t ever get a look in because they don’t tick the boxes and haven’t got leftie nonsense lyrics.

Pretty much it all stems from the BBC pushing it, not because it’s the most popular music.

The lyrics.
UK rap has been in the background for years, but seems that certain artists have raised its profile over the last few years, because they are rapping about more serious social matters.
Ive mainly listened to reggae and soul over the years, and it has overlapped a bit of late, but mainly because of the content.

It would’ve stayed in the background if it wasn’t for the BBC and all the other leftie organisations.

If people want to listen to rap then fair enough, but to then start talking like them and faking the accent is very strange. I think a lot of it is just in rebellion against decent music in the same way that screamo stuff is. It’s mainly people looking for an identity because they haven’t got one, it’s pretty sad.

:lolol: :lolol: :lolol: Fair play if this is a wind up, because that’s f*cking brilliant.

On the off hand this is serious though.

1) If you Listen to radio 1 you’d know they play a pretty eclectic mix of popular music. Hip-Hop, Indie Rock, Dance & Pop. Not my station of choice, but if it favours any genre of music it’s dance music; they have numerous shows dedicated entirely to dance music across the week.

2) There is no ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ which is exclusively Hip-Hop/Grime. You have made this up. I don’t think there’s even a spin-off Grime version. Strange lie to make up.

3) They’re doing a pretty shit job of getting rid of British pop music if that’s what they’re trying to do. The charts are dominated by British pop acts, much more than there was a few years ago.

4) Talented musicians have always fell through the cracks. This is an absolute horseshit point. Even by your pretty low standards

5) Yet again, complete bollocks. The U.K. hip-hop scene has been building itself up for 2 decades with next to no help from traditional media. It’s only in the last few years where the genre has blown up to a point where it can’t be ignored thst R1/Now etc have started playing it more frequently. Artists were entirely supported by small independent platforms on YouTube for years before the mainstream media cared.

6) Still waiting for an example of gang culture music being pushed too. Maybe there’s a “Now that’s what I call cheffing opps” CD that I’m not aware of.

Maybe I’m expecting too much though. Your posts so far probably make more sense when you’re scrawling them in crayons in your parents basement.
