How long is left on Ryan's contract?
In an ideal world, we'd always have a back up goalkeeper who is a threat to the starting keeper. Not one who we look at as able to 'do a job' if our starter gets injured, or called up to the international squad for a non-european competition (i.e. where the premier league is suspended for international breaks). But someone who we could see dropping the starter for, if something needs to be done.
I think it's all the more important to have such an option when your starter's contract negotiations are due. If there's no competition for the jersey, that keeper holds more power in negotiations.
