What a Cabinet Truss is putting together....a Cabinet of pure dross amalgamated from what is left of the Tory Party....its like when you are playing cards and you chuck out your low scoring cards in Trumps...

There is pretty much nobody else to choose from is there. Mogg is the only “name” left and he’s only stuck around because he is utterly unemployable anywhere else. Just a twerp who stands on the sidelines calling people names and defending the indefensible. He hasn’t had any gravitas for well over a decade.

I think that somebody suggested that the right leaning make up of Newsnight's political interviews was because of the tory leadership election. So, now its over we'll be seeing more representation from across the political spectrum. Tonight: IDS, one of Truss's economics advisors and a panel of three made up of a tory lord, a Johnson Spad and a former investment banker and FT journalist introduced as an independent voice. Two lines from the ever reliable Thangam Debbonaire, who they seem to believe is the only opposition MP in the country, balanced of course by two tory MPs, one of whom was, of course, Peter Bone.

Yeah, my mistake.

He did resign in April 2021 over Johnson’s continuous lies, but he became Veterans minister in July 2022 as part of the interim cabinet. Truss has now sacked him from that role.

Reading his letter though, he sounds like he could resign as an MP.

His wife's Twitter response was a bit salty. It wouldn't shock me to see him leave the party.

Why do you even need an opposition? It's not cost-effective. How many separate boards of directors does HSBC or Rio Tinto have.
Surely there are some economies that could be made here.

This general air of schadenfreude is strange, and worrying.

Whether the Govt is Blue, Red, Yellow Green or a mix, I want them to succeed in order that my life, and that of my family and friends, is as comfortable as possible.

Wanting failure in order to stick two fingers up at the cost of personal suffering is most odd.

Not in my case. I’d love to have a strong, competent and honest government. As someone who voted for this shower, I promise you I am not enjoying the situation any more or less than the next person.

I’d vote Tory again, if they were competent and viable. But right now they are not. They’re an absolute farce.

Liz Truss isn’t the final straw, mine was snapped long ago with Boris Johnson, but it’s hopefully an eye opener to those on the fence.

At this stage it’s going to rightly be a Labour landslide. Truss is just a new low for this era of politics.

Where did this idea that you need a cabinet of allies come from? All Labour governments had a mix of left and right. Thatcher had various wets in her cabinet. Major had europhiles and eurosceptics, even May had Brexiters and Remainers but now competence takes a back seat and it's more important to get mates in. It doesn't bode well for the future.

I suspect that, apart from the most ardent left winger or right winger, wants the government of the day to succeed and make their life better. Apart from the two aforementioned groups, I don't think anyone is hoping for failure but having said that, we can judge from what the government say as to whether we are likely to benefit. So far, I have heard nothing from Truss that suggest we are going to be better off.

Gods country fortnightly
Like Johnson before Truss's cabinet is packed full of nodding dogs, you need a breadth of opinion for good governance

Notable, that hardly anyone from Sunak's team makes it, and this from someone that only achieved 47% support from Tory members.

We're now up to 8 foreign secretaries under the Tories, little surprise we're no long taken seriously across much of the world.

Three years ago following Kwarteng's brilliant stint as a junior Brexit minister, when he was unable to remain contactable (traditionally a basic requirement of a Minister)

Kwasi Kwarteng was, this morning, appointed Minister of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. He will also attend Cabinet.

He would have been appointed yesterday, but didn't realise that amongst his responsibilities as a minister in DExEU was keeping his phone turned on so that people could contact him when needed.

Just about sums up the level of Brexiteer that Johnson is now having to appoint to make up the numbers for his Cabinet

and 4 years ago, Suella Braverman as a junior Brexit minister, committed to paying the EU 'divorce bill' before any negotiations had even started and we were still threatening 'no deal'

We've also agreed to pay the complete 'divorce' bill before we even find out whether we have a trading agreement :dunce:

Britain will be legally bound to pay its £39bn Brexit divorce bill before the details of a future EU trade deal are agreed, a minister has admitted.

Details https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-divorce-bill-uk-pay-eu-trade-deal-talks-david-davis-suella-braverman-a8364841.html

Thanks Suella

I wonder if Liz has appointed them to two of the top 3 jobs in the country in an desperate attempt to look relatively competent

We're on our eleventh digital, culture and media secretary, at a time of massive upheaval in the media sector allied with major technological changes.

Of course she has. That was Johnson's way of working too

At the moment it sort of makes sense for her, you dont want any pesky Sunak supports questioning how we will pay for all the bailouts incoming on top of the covid costs.

"She's like an early Thunderbirds puppet.

Incredible, like just seriously incredible that we have got THAT now leading the country, at a time of several great serious crises.

Holy f****** s*** "
