I was critical of Liz Truss in her recent 'Baltic allies over the Black Sea' gaffe, but in this case, I agree with you.

Lavrov is gaming her, and by seeking to come across as superior/dismissive, put her on the back foot. It's almost as if he wants to see the talks fail.

Truss was an easy target, he researched the weak point in the western diplomatic armoury to exploit, better than she researched the details on the ground or his probable motivation for having the talks.

The first gaffe leads to the second: the first one showed to Lavrov that her knowledge of the region isn't good enough. That then leads to the obvious ploy that he exploited. So in that respect, I disagree: this is simply a natural extension of the first error (that should never have been made), and IMO her people should have 'gamed' the possibility that Lavrov would seek to test her and ensured she was prepared. That they apparently didn't is worrying.

They wanted to shoot the messenger. So they did it. They would have planned it meticulously, asking a trick question about two towns in Russia, as though they were in Ukraine. Liz Truss fell into the trap. Messenger duly shot. A good day's work.

It tells us that Liz Truss was indeed unprepared. But it also tells us that the Russians were never going to pay any attention to her anyway.

Lavrov said this. "Russia has been cheated and wronged for many years." Translated, it means the talks were always going to fail.
