[Politics] Tory meltdown finally arrived [was: incoming]...

I saw this but the Russians would seek to undermine any UK or European politician. They know there is a constituency over here very receptive to this message and this narrative very much matches Russian interests.

True but not excuse for this which is why he said she was unprepared

Lavrov said, "Do you recognize Russia's sovereignty over Rostov and Voronezh oblasts?"

Truss said the UK would "never" do so – before the ambassador told her they're not in Ukraine

Pretty ignorant of her, yes. I’m just not sure that I want to be taking sides with the likes of Lavrov whilst he plays geographical verbal games with our officials then tweets his ‘superiority.’ I understand you aren’t doing so.

You're right, Lavrov is gaming this situation.

Trouble is, Truss has no background in this and there's a limit to how much she could have been briefed.

We've got no diplomatic heavyweights we could have sent. The sharper tools have been cast aside

Truss should stay well out of international war games, particularly when the stakes are seemingly very high, and stick to matters of cheese.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to apply but regret to inform you that the Director of Communications job has been given to Guto Harri. Good luck with your future endeavours.

I was critical of Liz Truss in her recent 'Baltic allies over the Black Sea' gaffe, but in this case, I agree with you.

Lavrov is gaming her, and by seeking to come across as superior/dismissive, put her on the back foot. It's almost as if he wants to see the talks fail.

More like this is the point of the talks. To visibly best a western opposite number.

Truss was an easy target, he researched the weak point in the western diplomatic armoury to exploit, better than she researched the details on the ground or his probable motivation for having the talks.

We've been horribly exposed

nothing unusual about a government losing public support mid term, but when it comes to the crunch nobody in their right mind will vote for trotskyists labour and put them in charge of their money how ever well they hide behind their front PR man starmer and call someone with a bit of tinsel round their neck a Christmas party

we'll see

The first gaffe leads to the second: the first one showed to Lavrov that her knowledge of the region isn't good enough. That then leads to the obvious ploy that he exploited. So in that respect, I disagree: this is simply a natural extension of the first error (that should never have been made), and IMO her people should have 'gamed' the possibility that Lavrov would seek to test her and ensured she was prepared. That they apparently didn't is worrying.

The Russians had no intention of listening to Liz Truss.

They wanted to shoot the messenger. So they did it. They would have planned it meticulously, asking a trick question about two towns in Russia, as though they were in Ukraine. Liz Truss fell into the trap. Messenger duly shot. A good day's work.

It tells us that Liz Truss was indeed unprepared. But it also tells us that the Russians were never going to pay any attention to her anyway.

Lavrov said this. "Russia has been cheated and wronged for many years." Translated, it means the talks were always going to fail.

She also had to be told to stop talking because the interpreters were still translating.

I am pleased to inform you of some much better news about your application for Head of Communications at the Kremlin. You will shortly receive lots of cash and a season ticket at Stamford Bridge

But we already know that Liz Truss is way out of her depth.

For me, what is more worrying is that the Russians sought to expose her. If the Russians had really wanted the diplomat talks to work, then they wouldn't have done so.

I think it just shows the deep contempt in which Russia view the UK, both in general and this Government in particular. Perfidious Albion has never been more apposite.
