I remember lookind down at Baghdad, Basra and Kuwait and the lights of the linking motorway about 8 years back on a Qatar night flight.
Biggest shock was 4 years back on Air India home from Delhi when the lights of Kabul came into view below and on the flight screen. Checked afterwards and apparently they are confident the Taliban do not have Ground to Air missiles capable of reaching that altitude. Don't think BA takes that route.

Sounds about right. It seems to have happened around the same time as the rocket attacks at the US bases so Tehran were probably expecting an immediate response and were over prepared with human settings set to sensitive.

I flew Etihad from Johannesburg via Abu Dhabi to Heathrow a few years back and that went over Somalia and Yemen to The UAE, then over Basrah and Baghdad in Iraq and right over Syria on the way to Heathrow. I believe it still does too.

So, having watched the Trump stream of consciousness, which started with, "During my presidency, Iran will never have a nuclear weapon" before the greeting, the takeaways are quite clear. Firstly, it's all Obama's fault for not assassinating the Soleimani chap sooner. Secondly, it's Nato's fault for vague reasons. Finally, all the Iranian-terrorism of the last 6 years has been funded by the deal done with Iran to prevent nuclearisation.

At PMQ's today Johnson, while skipping direct questions about the American assassination and it's legality in international law, tried to malign Corbyn by saying " he wanted to leave NATO " as if that is relevant to a crisis initiated by a NATO member in the Middle East, far from its normal sphere of operation and influence.

Still, it deflects, confuses and muddies the waters until everyone forgets what the original question was. Johnson has learnt well.

The Iranians used pinpoint accurate ballistic missiles to shoot into the bases, with no intention to kill.
But with the intention of saying 'ha you didn't think we could do that, did you?'
So let's all take a step back before someone does something really stupid.

Iran mistakenly shot down the Ukrainian plane that crashed on Wednesday near Tehran with 176 people on board, US media report.

US officials say they believe the Ukrainian International Airlines Boeing 737-800 was hit by a missile, CBS says.

Ukraine earlier said it was examining whether a missile strike brought down the aircraft - but Iran ruled this out.

The crash came just hours after Iran carried out missile strikes on two airbases housing US forces in Iraq.

CBS News quoting US intelligence said a satellite detected infrared "blips" of two missile launches, followed by another blip of an explosion.

Meanwhile, Newsweek quoted a Pentagon and a senior US intelligence officials, as well as an Iraqi intelligence official as saying they believed the Ukrainian plane was hit by a Russian-made Tor missile.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said "I have my suspicions" over the plane. "Somebody could have made a mistake," he said.
