Agree with RotR. I'd also add Ipswich in the League Cup (same year as the Derby game), and the Sheff Wed promotion game that same season. Those would be my five.

nowhere near Burgess Hill
Liverpool Cup game in 1991
Man City Game, not sure of the year but we won 2-1, City came down with all their inflatable bananas
For some reason one that always sticks in my mind is a game against Bournemouth when a poor decision got made and the North was going mental until Micky Small got a goal.
Pompey Cup game 1992/93
Then the Donny/York games of course.

0-0 evening cup game vs Arsenal..... 1979 or 80... I think... it was pissing down.... Gooners were in the North Stand in numbers..... it was scary, electric, exciting... all at once.... great old school atmosphere......

That only alllows me one every 6 seasons so it's almost impossible, but these spring to mind:

Wolves LC round 3 1969. My first 30k crowd. We were winning 2-1 at half-time. Lost 3-2 though. It would be like Bournemouth v Everton today.

Bournemouth boxing day 1970 ... scary or what. "SuperMac, superstar, walks like a woman and he wears a bra ..."

Surprised no one has mentioned Fans United or Storerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Clough's first game. 16,000 on a Sunday afternoon during the power cuts and a never-endiong rendition of You'll never walk alone

Any evening game at the end of a season when pushing for promotion. Pall of cigarette smoke hanging over the ground as the sun goes down ... magic. Kenny Beamish scoring in injury time v Rotherham (?) was a great example

Better stop as I'm over the 5 already.

Liverpool FA Cup 1984 2-0. Terry Connor's 2nd goal, just after Gerry Ryan's first, in front of the North was the most mental I ever saw the North Stand. 30 seconds into this clip provides the unrefutable evidence. Brighton 2-0 Liverpool (FA Cup 1984) - YouTube

Fans United 1997 5-0 v Hartlepool. Gates to the north were bust open so a number of us contributed nothing to Belotti's hated regime.
Fog added to the atmosphere.

Doncaster, last game at Goldstone.

Sunderland, late 70s when Eric Potts scored twice in added time to win 2-1.

Palace 1979 Boxing Day 3-0, first time Mullery's team beat the scum.

  1. 2 - 0 win over Liverpool in the FA cup, Sunday afternoon in Feb' 84.
  2. Liverpool replay 1991.
  3. Promotion back to Div 2 in '86 (or was it '85) - can't remember who against (bad fan) a Northern club perchance.
  4. 4 - 0 win over Man City on the way to Wembley in '83, made sweeter by being accompanied to the game by a Man City season ticket holding friend.
  5. 4 - 4 with Orient in the final days of the Goldstone, definitely atmosphere but not a particularly nice one.

Millwall play off was good at good at home, especially as we were the "underdogs" and then when we went back to their place it was good atmosphere despite the fire on the terrace and Wall fans dislike for the old bill , I also remember a two two draw against Dirty Leeds being a good atmos, the other obvious was of course fans united and Donny,I am far (well not that far) too young for the good ol days of the early eighties

Second half of the Walsall 7-0 game (Ward 4 Mellor 3) was pretty mental.
Rochdale '72 was fantastic.
2-8 vs Bristol Rovers under Cloughie was a "special" atmosphere.

When we beat Barnet in one of the final games at the goldstone , remember their manager saying it was one of the most intimidating places he'd been too for a game of football (I think it was Barnet & it was 1-0 my memory not 100%)
I cant be bothered to name another 4 games they've all been mentioned already

Albion 6 Watford 0....well done Adrian Thorne.....for his 5

Great stuff, my first match at the Goldstone with my dad, remember it being very noisy (31,038 ), plus the three mentioned at the top of the thread, the match against Blackpool ,33,431 (77/78). I suppose us fans that were at these matches were so lucky to have been part of the atmosphere. I don't think we will ever be witness to the same atmosphere at the Amex simply because everyone is seated and we won't ever have our beloved North Stand massive swaying about. Still onward and upward thats the main thing

The final half dozen games at the Goldstone were a near tribal atmosphere. Orient 4-4, fans united & Doncaster were all amongst the best.

However there were two games in the same season that really stuck out we played Barnet at home and won 1-0 in the final evening game at the great ground, the Barnet manager Terry Bullivant said it was an atmosphere you don't get in the basement league. And he hadn't heard a crowd like that apart from Anfield and Old Trafford (high praise).

We also played top of the table Wigan in our penultimate Saturday fixture at the Goldstone, they were flying high and we were still rooted to the bottom although our home form was superb. We ground out a great 1-0 win thanks to a well placed Craig Maskell header, again the atmosphere was superb and we held on for 3 crucial points.

Finishing with 10 wins and 2 draws from our final 12 home games effectively kept us up as we were truly abysmal away from home that season. I went to 20 out of 23 away games that season and missed our only victory away at Hartlepool.

A former FD of the club (who helped get rid of Archer/Belotti) told me on Sunday that he watched the Watford game from halfway up a tree outside the NW corner of the Goldstone.
