Top five games for atmosphere at the goldstone that you attended

Great stuff, my first match at the Goldstone with my dad, remember it being very noisy (31,038 ), plus the three mentioned at the top of the thread, the match against Blackpool ,33,431 (77/78). I suppose us fans that were at these matches were so lucky to have been part of the atmosphere. I don't think we will ever be witness to the same atmosphere at the Amex simply because everyone is seated and we won't ever have our beloved North Stand massive swaying about. Still onward and upward thats the main thing

Blackpool game, no question. Plus just about any game in the 78-9 promotion season and first season in the top division. Heady stuff.
And we're just around the corner from some more ...

Rotherham 2-1, 71-2 Division 3, 27,928
Aldershot FA Cup 3-1, 3rd Round Replay 66-7, 29,208
Oxford United 0-0, 64-5 Division 4, 22,697
Tottenham H 3-1, 77-8 Division 2, 32,647

But if my memory comes back, I might include a few more. The middle two were night games. I think games were more exciting when I was younger, but there was still a buzz of excitement that is sometimes lacking now.

In no particular order

77 Ipswich Town 2-1 League Cup (Ipswich finished 3rd in Division 1 that year)

77 Derby County 1-1 (Wardy in 1st minute and all that)

76 Palace 2-2 (FA Cup 1st Round,Harkouk late equaliser)

76 Palace 2-0 (Sammy Morgan brace, probably the best I have experienced at the Goldstone)

79 Palace 3-0 (Put Palace to the sword in a typical Boxing Day atomsphere)

I used to think a lot of the night games at the Goldstone often had a better atmosphere than the Saturday matches. I don't know how attendances stand up but I know my brothers & friends who played footy or worked Saturdays would go to mid week matches. It also seemed that on a Tuesday night we'd play some cracking football but the following Saturday we would play rubbish. Even last season we were sublime against Derby but really not up to it against Middlesborough.

The Tottenham 3-1 was classic and a great (but nasty) atmosphere. I'll never forget how we went on to teach them a footballing lesson. It was appropriate after the behavior of their fans.

That only alllows me one every 6 seasons so it's almost impossible, but these spring to mind:

Wolves LC round 3 1969. My first 30k crowd. We were winning 2-1 at half-time. Lost 3-2 though. It would be like Bournemouth v Everton today.

Bournemouth boxing day 1970 ... scary or what. "SuperMac, superstar, walks like a woman and he wears a bra ..."

Surprised no one has mentioned Fans United or Storerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Clough's first game. 16,000 on a Sunday afternoon during the power cuts and a never-endiong rendition of You'll never walk alone

Any evening game at the end of a season when pushing for promotion. Pall of cigarette smoke hanging over the ground as the sun goes down ... magic. Kenny Beamish scoring in injury time v Rotherham (?) was a great example

Better stop as I'm over the 5 already.

That Wolves game, great stuff and if my memory serves me,didn't Derek Dougan lob the keeper at the north end only to see the ball bounce over the crossbar.

It was Richards. I remember watching it bounce over the bar.
Edit - No. can't have been Richards. He didn't make his debut till '70 but I don't think it was Dougan.

94 Bournemouth 3 3 (the last 5 minutes anyway!!) Although nowhere near full, when the 3rd went in was the craziest I saw the North...any video?

I was too young to go to that game (and it was a school night), but I still vividly remember the Argus headline the next day in it's extensive report of the game: 'So near, yet so far'. :clap2:

My first game was Brighton Reserves v Charlton Reserves in 1976. There was a crowd of 17,000 as this was the first opportunity to get tickets for the match against Derby who were reigning league champions. I remember the atmosphere being really good, Brighton won 3 nil and it was a party atmosphere if anything.

The match against Derby was something else especially after Wardy scored after 38 seconds.

Sheffield Wednesday the same season just prior to promotion was another stand out, evening game if I remember rightly.

1984 beating Liverpool in the FA Cup on a Sunday afternoon, my first excursion onto the pitch!

I also remember a Friday night game against Northampton in about 1988. We got promoted and they were up there as well. We won 3-0.

looking at them 4 out of 5 are evening games, which I personally think are better for atmosphere anyway!

Sunderland, late 70s when Eric Potts scored twice in added time to win 2-1.

PG[/QUOTE]

definitely this. Potts was lightweight and out of favour, but on this occasion the only attacking option we had on the bench. there was a collective sigh of depression when he came on. But bugger me he turned the game on its head in 3 minutes, and I nearly died with a mixture of laughter, celebrating and machem nose rubbing in dirt!

One up for the gingers!

Albion 1 Doncaster 0 1996/7. Abysmal game, Ian 'Bonkers' Baird realised that he would get nothing out of Darren Moore, the Donny centre back, so managed to get both of them sent off early doors. The atmosphere was incredible though, transistor radios were in ears to see if any of our rivals had fallen, and it was ironically Orient beating Hereford that day that gave us a lifeline.

Albion 1 Norwich 0; FA Cup QF 1983.

Albion 3 Sheff Wed 2 in 1977, the first time I saw the Albion promoted.

Albion v York 1996, match abandoned, you know why.

Albion 2 Arsenal 1 1982, cracking game, Arsenal took the lead with a 35 yarder from John Hollins ( I think) we fought back to win. I honestly thought we were laying the foundations for a long period in the top flight.

could not have picked 5 better
and the one that sticks out is the Sheffield Wednesday game what a great atmosphere that was
