Well the great man should be well on his way to being pissed by now. Have a marvelous time. I'm sorry that I couldn't get over to be with you. We've had some good times together and I've got the pictures to prove it.

I think it's time that we revealed to Geardy who really did the graffiti "Fat Al is a xxxxer" on the training ground wall. After all that poor sod got the blame from Mullers and George.

Those of you who have never seen the great man play will I am sure have gathered from this thread that Peter Ward was something special. Chris Cattlin had been in the game and had played at the highest level for many years when Ken Gutteridge signed Wardy for the Albion. Catt nicknamed him Whizz after a comic character Billy Whizz. Chris thinks that he was one of the most exciting players he had ever seen.

Happy Birthday Doris!

Shame he couldn't hack it in the top division though.

The online Argus article has a reader reply from his daughter Louisa saying she's coming to Brighton from Florida just to see him play as she's never seen him play in Brighton.

Why did Clough buy him off us then?

I think Taylor was back with Clough then and probably caught Clough sober enough one day to realise it might be a good move?

I remember Wardy saying at some end of season do that Clough really had a dislike for him

Clough knew that, in their partnership, it was Taylor who could spot talent.

When it was rumoured that Taylor was interested in Peter Withe, at the time an in/out striker with Wolves (I believe), Clough nipped in to buy him for Forest & he was the soearhead of theirt forward line for some years.

Nostalgia is a stange thing, you cannot explain it to someone else that isn't feeling the same thing. I tried to explain to my son how it felt to be 15, walking along the Old Shoreham Road with 20+thousand other fans expecting that Peter Ward would stick a couple in the net. It was only when he tapped that goal in yesterday and every one around me jumped up and sang ' He shot , he scored, it must be Peter Ward' that I knew I was amongst other people who felt the same as me.

I too CELEBRATED Wardy's goal like it really meant something... It would have been sad if His only contribution had been to miss the penalties - I know it was only a tap in but in my minds eye He swept the ball into the net with great skill and showed that the old magic hadn't left Him.

There is a great video on youtube now (called something like "Brighton's Glory Years") which includes some of His goals that you should show your son...

Ward was a true Albion legend and is by some way the most exciting player to watch that I have seen in the blue and white stripes in my 30 years following the club. How I wish we had a player like that now; the skill on the ball, the body swerves, the ucanny ability to be in the right place at the right time, the way he left players for dead etc. None of our other signings over the years comes close IMHO. If only such rich pickings still existed in the conference!
