We'd finish closer to Europe than we would to Palace. That'd hurt them.

Absolute nonsense.

Please can you make some stats (any that you choose) support the argument that Brighton are more likely to win the Premier League this year than are Manchester City...?

Not the interpretation I intended, but you're right. I'll amend the hashtag to #easytomakemostalreadypublishedstatssupportwhateverargumentyoulike

Yep, but in that same year Blackpool, 15th after 28 games, had 32 points and were relegated.

15th place is not in the top 14. Sorry for stating the obvious.

No team in the top 14 after 28 Games has ever been relegated from the EPL, since it went down to 20 teams.

You missed the point I was making.

The table that forms the basis of the stat that you quoted also shows that Blackpool, who had 32 points after 28 games were relegated. We have 31 points after 28 games. So - you can look at the stat that says that we're safe because we're 12th after 28 games and no team higher than 15th at this stage has been relegated; or you can look at the same table and conclude that we're not safe because Blackpool had 1 point more than us at the same stage of the season and were relegated. Hence the hashtag.

Goal difference is vital. Ours is fairly good for the position we are in.

And also the number of teams below us does in fact matter - more matches between them, more teams to cushion a couple of them going on a good run.

Exactly. Which is why a lot of us were surprised (when doing that predictor thing) that even with relatively pessimistic predictions, we ended up safe by a comfortable margin. It is still VERY close but the higher the number of teams below us the better (sounds obvious!) as they can't ALL go on a great run of results without damaging each others chances.

The 2011 season is interesting as it was actually even closer at this stage with only 10 points separating bottom and 7th. However, using Blackpool as an example doesn't really work. Yes they had one more point than us at the same point in the season but they were already on the slide. They started relatively well and then (aside from a few freak wins) the wheels fell off spectacularly and they only managed 3 wins in the whole second half of the season. Even so they only finished one point off 17th.

Goal difference between the bottom sides was also a lot closer after 28 games and this could come into play.

Anyway, the point still stands that Blackpool were 15th after 28 and no team 14th or above has ever gone down. Which is interesting.

Here's a question for statos. If it DOES happen, could this be the first year that not only did the three promoted teams stay up but ALSO kept their manager for the duration of the season?
