My partner always tips, even if the meal & or service is not up to scratch. Some times after I have left nothing she will even sneak a couple of quid on to the table. They choose a job that pays a certain amount. My pay is basic but I do not expect a tip when closing a deal or sale. Who has an opinion on this...?

And as for addingd 10%......dont get me started!

tight git

tips are expected as part of the job and encourages better service

if they were paid £5.50 per hour and got no tips ever then the service would be shit

I've had a couple of rows about this recently.

The first was a couple of weeks ago when I was paying for a team night out. A 10% service charge was added to the bill, which, as there was 8 of us was fair enough. Then, when I was paying by card the machine asked if I would like to pay a 2nd 'Service charge' I summoned the manager to tell him in no uncertain terms that he was a robbing bastard and that he could stick an additional service charge up his arse. His response was that some people don't notice. There's customer service for you. Indian Restaurant Silka, London Bridge, don't go there.

The second was about a penny tip I left. Before I went to the Cinema with my wife we had a meal in some shit restaurant. Having finished our meals I politely asked the waitress if she could remove our plates. The look she gave me was as if I'd asked if I could f*** her grandmother. My wife thought I was being unreasonable. I think a penny was a penny too much for the service we got.

I am by far not tight when tipping. I just hate the fact you are made to feel you have too. Why do we tip taxi drivers?? They have a job, get paid.

If they dont like the job at £5.50per hour - f***ing get another one. Dont rely on me paying your rent cos you want big tips. I give a good service at my job cos its what I am paid for. No tip = shit service - no way Jose, not in my job.

As a general rule, etiquette demands the tip should be somewhere between 8% and 12%.

When I get the bill, I'll take into consideration the service I've received. If the 10% addition is on the bill, I'll make a point of asking whether the 'service charge' goes to the waiter/waitress. If it doesn't, I ask them to take the tip off the bill, and leave my own tip - if it's deserved. If the staff still don't receive the tip, I'll not bother at all with it, and remind myself not to go there again.

If I do end up paying the 'service charge', I NEVER leave a tip.

I worked as a waiter in a hotel when I first left school, my choice to some extent but there were four million out of work so I was fortunate to have a job. I can testify that the wages were crap, I was lucky that I still lived at home and wasn't trying to support a family on it, the small amount we received in tips just supplemented that poor wage. The worst bit was that the management used to nick our tips, if we didn't get to them first, then share them out amongst themselves.

This taught me a couple of vital lessons about management, don't trust the bastards and when you get to that position yourself be honest with your staff and try to treat them as you would wish to be treated yourself (certainly it is not appropriate to steal from them). I think you may find that where a service charge is added that very little, if any, of it actually goes to the waiting staff. My advice is that if you feel the service has been good to either leave an amount that you think is deserved or even better to give it to the waiter/waitress who has served you.

Try the US, it's manditory to leave 15%. Mind you usually the food is better and cheaper as is the service. However, woe betide anybody who doesn't leave the 15% no matter how bad the fare was.

with you on that one

I see your point! However, I have only left nothing when the food/service has been poor. I usualy leave a tip but just disagree with having to even when its been a poor show.

I never tip. When I go out to a restaurant/have my windows cleaned/whatever service I expect good service as standard, not something I should reward with extra money.

I used to tip in New York as I knew the minimum wage was appalling and not enough to live on....I don't go out much anymore so tipping is a thing of the past

On the flip side, it's actually considered RUDE to tip in Japan.

Brilliant. :)

Edit: Unless you're in a strip bar or something, obviously.
