If they bring in fortnightly refuse collections round these parts, the binmen can look forward to a tip every two years

brighton, actually
anyone know if the 'service charge' additions is actually legal? (whether notified on the menu, or not).. the whole idea of goung to a restuarant is for someone else to cook, serve and washup.. it surely doesnt cost more to 'serve' a £20 steak than it does a £5 salad (prives are approximate, precooked weight!)

Maybe it might be the restaurant owners obligation to pay a reasobale wage.....and not the customers to subsidise their wage structure ..

???

Exactly - so include it in the price, no confusion, no feeling obliged etc.
In France it's either 'Service compris' or 'Service non-Compris' printed on the menu - in the UK we never seem to know.

the owner is allowed to pay under the minimum wage and use your tip to bring the staffs pay up to the minimum wage if they want

Nobody should have to rely on tips to make up the minimum wage they should be on top of your minimum wage.

I REALLY don't get this - in parts of Dublin the binmen expect a tip (used to be a 'christmas box' of food/booze, now cash). I never see my binmen, they come either at 6am or when I'm in work.

I know my postman to see from signing for parcels - he usually comes before I leave the house - but they're not allowed take tips.

Presumably they do have to bring it up to at least the minimum wage though - otherwise they are paying below the minimum. So average tips mean they earn the minimum whereas good tips means they will earn more.
I would only find this acceptable if tips are given to the individual that I want to reward and not shared amongst everyone.
