The first caller on 606 was a London based Owls fans who called in to say that he was offended that the BBC were calling it a shock.
His words were "we are a much bigger club than Brighton so how is it a shock".
Sutton and ABB said it was a shock as BHA were Prem and SW were not but he wasn`t having any of it.

For me, tinpot is epitomised by the use of:

- fecking drums to try and coordinate people's chanting and generate an atmosphere

I always struggle with this one. I'd hardly call the likes of Dortmund and Bayern tinpot with their atmospheres co-ordinated by a drum? In fact if done well still believe it could drag the currently dismal Amex atmosphere into something respectable.

He actually used the word 'massive' to describe his team. I was very pleased by that :lolol:

With crowds of low 20 thousands for quite some years now rattling around in a crumbling shithole of a stadium (some of them mocking our ground... Haha ffs) it makes me chuckle that some call us tinpot. And some mentions of forest, west brom and others as big clubs who should be in the top flight. Why? Forest could hardly muster 20k not so long ago. History is just that really. The likes of Forest and Wednesday will never be seen as huge clubs by younger generations, the same way Preston North End aren't anymore.

Just like most clubs though, away from message boards the majority of their fans will be decent reasonable folk so take the ramblings on their board with a pinch of salt as they should ours (the whole 'massive' joke is pretty bloody boring by some on here now)

“ Regards Brighton they have no history...they've only ever completed 6 (six) seasons in the top flight.”

lovely stuff

The poor deluded fool.

A few more seasons in the doldrums might teach him a little humility.

their potential is greater than ours. T

Don't agree with that part at all. They're a permanent fixture in the middle of the Championship and are about to be docked up to (probably close to) 21 points, scuppering this season's campaign. Once they get up they'll be miles behind all the sides that stay up who've been scooping in bonanza TV money while they've been racking up debt. You only have to look at how that other massive club, Aston Villa, are struggling this season to see it's not quite as simple as having an FA Cup semi final ground and some old school fans.

Meanwhile we are owned by one of the cleverest men in the country who is worth an absolute shitload of cash, and who intends to develop us in to a top 10 Prem team using one of the most exciting young British managers in the game, all whilst remaining a true fan and handing the club on as a legacy to his family.

30K tickets sold every home league game and many, many fans on the ST waiting list. An absolute treasure trove of young players either just starting in the first team or out on loan, two of whom are in teams competing with Wednesday.

Unless someone can sort out their FFP clusterfudge, turn Hillsborough in to a modern, fit for purpose stadium and stop "bigger" - i.e. Premier League - sides beating them to decent players then in twenty years time, when today's 10 year olds who only know the league in its current snapshot are 30, we will be seen as the bigger club and all their history, authenticity and Sid James memes won't be worth a piss in the wind.

When I started watching the Albion, we were in Division 1, and Wednesday in Division 2.

This is seared in my brain as how football is.

They will always be a lower league, smaller club to me because of this.

I think the league snapshot when anyone starts watching football has a *massive* effect on how someone perceives a club's status/'bigness'.

Ironically the club who’s fans conceded we created one of / the best home atmosphere any of them have ever heard - short memories or just thick, judging ya on a small cup game with stadium half full!

They have a point it's like a library this season and where has the atmosphere gone because it's awful at times and I sit in the north stand

Same up and down the country though mostly (unfortunately). I noticed a thread on their board slating how bad the atmosphere is at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday, bitter and twisted since Highbury in 1983!

They aren’t even the biggest team in Sheffield?

What is it about Yorkshire clubs thinking they are big clubs who are entitled, when they languish in lower leagues.

I much prefer our family, community club. We may not be the biggest but we are certainly the very best and we remain grounded

Almost worth creating an account on Owlstalk just to reply to this one..

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Big clubs like us and the likes of Forest and hate to say it L**ds should be in the Prem every year, not garbage like Bournemouth and Brighton.

Win a promotion spot. Simple. But something that had eluded them this century.

Hate those entitled w@nkers who believe they are better than their league position actually proves.

****wits living in past glory. They can't match our attendances when we were in the Championship, even though they are doing alright. It's a shame that they could have a points reduction for trying to cheat their way to the promised land, can't even get that right.
Remember there fans saying that Lewis Dunk will be playing for them the following season after the play off semi final at Hillsborough. They thought that his head would be turned after witnessing the atmosphere. Maybe it only happens when they play the little teams.
It must really grate them that us and the bigger Sheffield team are in the premier league whilst they are in the Championship.

So on that basis Grimsby fans who were regularly in the second tier, whilst we were struggling in the fourth tier, could argue that we are always to be a lower league, smaller team than them.

Righto.

Yes, depending on when they started watching football when young.

There is a lot of bollocks talked about “ big club”

You can measure it in all sorts of ways.

Currently, the “ big club” label should only be measured by champions league entrance. Although is the Greek champions in the same “ big club”;as say Barcelona or Liverpool?

I would say that in the UK, it would be Liverpool, man united, Celtic, and that would really be it.

You could argue that Man City and Chelsea are possible to be added, and maybe Rangers.

For me this is why a cup run of any flavour is so important to our club. Just to remain in the top division with no hope of winning it , or hopefully finishing 1 place above the relegation zone ( which seems to be the ambition of some people) maybe financially fantastic, but I suppose our season’s highlights must be winning games against those clubs that we have regarded in the past as much “ bigger “ clubs than we are.

The only really accurate way to measure the size of a club is via the league table system that they all play in. All other measures are arguable.

When fans feel like their are underachieving in the league measure they start to clutch at straws and find other ways of measuring their 'size'.

I have no beef with Wednesday, I think Sheffield is a brilliant city and the people wonderful. Good luck to them if they can sort their club out to get back to where they feel it belongs.

For me, tinpot is epitomised by the use of:

- goal music
- big flags behind the goals waved when the home team scores
- bubbles
- clackers (yes, I know we did this but learnt our lesson) especially regularly
- music like Glad All Over and Z-Cars
- fecking drums to try and coordinate people's chanting and generate an atmosphere
- use of a megaphone to try and do the above as well

That's nothing. What's really tin-pot is playing crowd noises through the PA to try and rack up the 'atmosphere', as happened here:

https://www.11v11.com/matches/sheffield-wednesday-v-oldham-athletic-24-november-1993-21420/

(I was there).

This. We (by which I mean TB) worked out what it would take to be a PL without breaking the bank. It was going to take a new ground, training centre and... being 'Premier League Ready' - on and off the field.
It took time but with all the right components in place, we earned it. Not because we used to be a 'big club' but because we *EARNED* it.
We might not have a long pedigree in the top div but we are back and clearly planning to stay. And I'll say it again... Because we *EARNED* it.
