I can't be bothered to read through this thread but I assume it's just a continuation of the ongoing left of centre (middle) class war against the working classes because they dare to have a different view of what is best for them and drink at a different establishment..

Well it descended into that but the original post was just having a laugh at Clarke taking a dig at Martin. Surely a diehard brexiteer like yourself can see the funny side?

I might as well add this (although I know I'm sounding like a proper Spoons apologist). Summer last year in Bournemouth, I paid £20+ for a steak dinner (medium-rare 8oz sirloin) with all the trimmings one night at a fairly posh independent restaurant in town. Everything on my plate arrived lukewarm, so I sent it back. When it came back, the steak had been cremated, so I sent it back again and told them to forget it.

The missus had her meal which was alright, but I was thoroughly macked off. They took my meal off the bill and I got a "complementary" irish coffee, which did not do much to retrieve the evening.

The next day driving home, we stopped off in Bognor on the way and ended up in a Spoons, on their "2 for 1 steak day" or whatever the offer is. Long story short, for south of £16 - including a drink each - we both had a steak lunch. My 10z rump was done perfectly as was hers. It absolutely pissed all over the restaurant from the night before.

Sometimes, pre-conceptions come a long way before "standards".

Yep the newly elevated middle classes are the worst at this sneering. I think it stems from a lack of their own security which creates a need to continue to distance themselves from those worse off.

All right I'll put my head over the parapet.

Tim Martin is not everyone's cup of tea but if you don't like his politics don't give him any of your readies?

Some 'Spoons are awful (mostly due to the Clientele e.g. The Golden Hope in Sittingbourne)

Some 'Spoons are delightful (I defy you to fault the Peter Cushing in Whitstable)

Food is ordinary pub grub but cheap.

Beer is cheap .and (almost always) in good nick.

I don't begrudge him his success, it has come from OPENING Pubs, as opposed to, for example, good old fashioned Breweries like Hall & Woodhouse who have asset stripped a certain Horsham based family brewery and closed half their Pubs in Sussex so they can be turned into Property Developments.

Well perhaps you should have.

A summary of the thread;

- schadenfreude at Tim Martin’s plight
- (positive) information on the quality of the chain’s beer equipment
- debunking of a couple of anti-spoons myths
- first-hand anecdote about of Tim Martin being a **** to his staff.
- recommendations of some specific spoons pubs in beautiful converted buildings
- first-hand anecdote of value / quality of specific meals
- discussion of the overall business strategy
- Tim Martin is a ****

The one thing that irks me about cheap food, and the same can be said for cheap drinks, is the quality and standard of the way its produced. The welfare of the animals, in the case of meat, and the welfare of the people who produce it all . . . . I care about that and what I shove down my neck.

TM has a business plan and model that works, as do the big breweries, albeit diversifying into property development . . . I don't have a problem with either per se. It is however possible to run a pub with good quality produce and competitive pricing . . . It just depends how desperate you are for profit over sustainability.

This country, like America, is in a race to the bottom of standards and quality, to offset the broad spread of low incomes. Whilst the minority hoover it all up and **** us all over.

The 'Spoons near me is fair enough, and my pre-match Blue Moon is about £5 a bash in the craft pub or about 2 notes in Tim's gaff.

Beyond that, I care not.

I know who would play him in a movie though.

I'm not a great fan of paying over the odds and am certainly not a fan of names and labels. I don't have any issue or argument about what Spoons do and in any other situation I would be happy to partake. But the reason I compared it to the best blowjob in the world from Katie Hopkins for 50p, is because for me, it comes down to whether I would deal with and give money to that particular person and I don't think I am alone in saying that this is a situation where I wouldn't :)

I've just read the thread myself and am wondering why you couldn't be bothered to do the same? You, along with the two people affirming your assertion are no better than the people doing the sneering.

In short, there is a bit of sneering as you suspect but on balance, hkfc's summary does a good job. It's actually quite interesting.

My take on 'spoons is that I would always go elsewhere given the choice because TM is such a tosser, but I'm not so fussed that I'd kick up a stink if my mates arranged that over anywhere else. For all those people who avoid giving TM any money, it's worth bearing in mind that Spoons going to the wall will always impact the workers before him unfortunately.

The thread was started to point out that Spoons is running out of certain beers, just as Nandos is closing outlets, Tesco has half it's cheap imports missing from its online orders and McDonalds are struggling to fulfil milkshakes. As a defender of the working classes and the common eatery I'm surprised you're not FUMING. I wonder why not?

Seeing as Nandos/Tesco/McDonalds all provide shit unhealthy food this is clearly good news.

Lets hope people get themselves down to their local Farm Shops and support the Local Economy instead.
