IF my granny had bollocks she'd be my grandad, no comparison really is there, we both know the difference in the chances of becoming a casualty as a soldier on the ground in helmand, and as a policeman in a relatively quiet town on the sussex coast.

Don't join the army then? I thought about it and then decided a career where I wasn't likely to be shot at would suit me better. That isn't to say I don't have respect for people who take up a career in the services, I have plenty of respect for them all.

If any group deserves some freebees it's the over worked and under paid NHS workers.

Good to see that is happening. Can you explain why you feel troops should get tickets over Albion fans though? I wouldn't have a problem with it if our stadium was half empty the whole time but it won't be.

so soldiers should be treated like second rate people, oh were not going to sell out, i know give them to the soldiers.

fact is if these people didnt join the army we would be like other countries when we had no choice but to do service in the army, thankfully we have people who are brave enough to put there life's on the line for this country

I totally respect our troops and the work that they do in the name of our country. But where do we stop in handing out 'free' tickets? You, yourself say you are on tons of overtime, great, I don't begrudge you a single penny of that.

In my opinion we should be handing out free tickets to those who genuinely cannot afford them. One example that springs to mind is a carer of a disabled person who has to work 35 hours minimum to get £55 carers allowance from the government £1.57 per hour! In a lot of cases those carers are on call with their loved ones 24/7. Not all carers are poor, but a hell of a lot are.

Free tickets for troops? No. Respect for troops, Yes.

Sorry - it must have been the red mist - it was a typo.....to be clear - the armed forces (in the UK or overseas) get NO overtime.....ever.

If you really do then you really must be a right miserable twat.

I'd have no issue if there were tens of thousands to shift, but theres a couple of thousand at best and they'll be in high demand, make everyone go through the same channel.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and why they are any more deserving that say a Fireman? Or someone working with the disabled or mentally ill?

What about troops that are albion fans, who cannot afford or commit to a ST?

What about everyone else that cannot afford or commit to a season ticket? I can't commit, can I have some free tickets please

This. There is no way of differentiating between all occupations who risk their lives to keep us safe or perform equally important work (fireman, nurses, doctors, carers). I see absolutely no reason why serviceman should be prioritised above these other groups.

Why not just admit that you're in the " soldiers are murdering bastards" camp.

What's the general feeling from the troops though? Is this something they want? Or do they feel patronised to be getting, what could be perceived as hand outs? A parallel can be made with disabled supporters and the fact that no concessions are given at Falmer. This is via a directive from a disabled body which views concessions as discrimination; and divides opinion greatly.

I don't have an issue with troops getting a few tickets to be honest.

I'm certainly not. I have friends and family in the military, most of whom really love their job and see the important work they do as reward enough. Maybe they are in the minority, I don't know.

I don't think that they are in the minority, most people in the armed forces take great pride in what they do, there aren't many who do it purely for the money and pension as there are far easier ways to earn both. In addition to the obvious defence of the nation and its interests at home and abroad the armed forces are often called into service whenever this country needs them for other reasons. Who was it that we called upon during the foot and mouth epidemic to carry out disposal of animal corpses, when the fire-fighters went on strike or when we have been hit by natural disasters such as flooding or heavy snow?

I refer back to the Tommy Atkins poem, our military are invisible for most of the time, but when called upon they respond in a manner that the country may be proud.

I would like to think that the Albion find it in their gift to recognise those who carry out their duties in a selfless manner, many of whom suffer life changing injury during their service, it is only a small gesture but one that means so much to all concerned.

Well, they're all work for the public service and do dangerous jobs. I don't have a problem with the army and think they should be helped out with care after troops come out injured. I just don't think giving troops free football tickets ahead of Albion fans is exactly fair on other public servicemen or Albion fans. If they want a ticket they should have to buy one like everyone else.

Are you for real, people like you make me feel sick to the stomach. Mods, can we please rename this board the Socialist North Stand Chat Board. Slowly but surely these people are infiltrating our board, that we have enjoyed for many, many years !! :tantrum:
