I'm sorry Charlie but after you stopped playing to respond to a fan chucking a bit of abuse at your play was totally unproffesional. I hope McGhee drops a fine on you, or at least some extra work in the community.

Lost a bit of respect for you yesterday!

Oatway should be shown the door. As soon as he gets beck in the team we go back to being shit! :censored:

I think, and always will, that abusing players during a game is completely counter-productive.

Some players may be able to shrug it off, some may not, but it doesn't take a degree in Psychology to work out that having a crowd behind you and encouraging you WILL be helpful.

Players don't deliberately go out onto the pitch to make mistakes but sometimes they will. I defy anyone to say that they have never made a mistake in their day to day work.

If you are at work and you have a couple of people standing next to you saying that you are SHIT because you have just made a mistake, would you be happy?

Everyone will have a bad day at the office, footballers included.

I didn't hear too many people slaughtering Charlie Oatway when he made that miraculous goal line clearance at Rotherham last season, which arguably kept us up.

We are all painfully aware of the problems that we face OFF the pitch. The way we support the team is one of the few things we CAN influence.

I just think that sometimes people should try and put themselves in the position of the person they are hurling abuse at. How would you feel if you were trying your very hardest and someone who doesn't have the talent you have is shouting that you are crap and not fit to do the job?

It is not his fault but Charlie Oatway is completely out of his depth at this level of professional football as I would be.

The other players know this as when he was on the pitch we played it long from the fullbacks bypassing midfield thus conceding possesion regualrly but when he was replaced we maintained possesion and played through the midfield and scored.

With regards to that, footballers, even at our level are paid a lot of money to do something most of us can only dream of doing, so if they have to take a bit of abuse, when they are not performing so be it.

However, when mentioned on previous threads about Cullips slightly aggressive come bullying approach that was part of his style of captaincy, was counter productive for players such as Harding, London Irish in particular took the view of poor little Dan and the nasty bully Cullip. Basically players like Harding should have to deal with being shouted at. In essence, what is the difference between Cullip abusing Harding and making Harding look somewhat shaky and a few people venting their frustrastions at a couple of underperformers when we are 2-0 down?

No difference ... both are unacceptable.
Oatway had a complete 'mare, he knows it, we know it and I too gave the standard 'for d%$ksake' but to get into his face and be personal isn't going to help. We don't pay for that privilage.

And Race, I'm afraid your attitude to the "we pay your wages" grumble comes across to me as somewhat arrogant. You're right of course - we don't pay the players wages directly, even if £100+ is a LOT of money for an afternoon at a football match for the family. But you've got to realise that the big money (that DOES pay player wages) will disappear if bums are not on seats. No sponsor will pay big money if stadiums are half empty.

I'm not denying that. You might see it as arrogant, but what I am saying is that just because you chose to buy a ticket (which contributes to wages etc) does not give you the right to verbally abuse players, especially mid game.

Would you walk up to a player after a game and say to his face 'oi I pay your wages so I'm going to stand here and call you f***ing useless blah blah blah'?

The point about Oatway is that he is always dishing it out to others - generally when it is his fault! :nono:

Charlie Oatway - club legend

Contributed massively to success of the team during these successful years both on and particularly off the field. Very very popular with the players and a key part of the famed team spirit that has seen the Albion flourish across the course of 4 different managers.

Sure, he had a nightmare game on Sat, in fact, it completely passed him by. But I think he can still do a job at this level once his form and confidence returns and I hope that everybody just gets off his back.

Charlie is a vital squad component.

dont matter
I feel he could still do a job if played just in front of the back four with Hammond & Carpenter/Nicholas/Reid in front of him.In a straight 4 4 2 he's not up to it.

PS. His column in the programme has dropped right off as well.

I respectfully disagree. Personally, I can honestly say I've never done that (I prefer to just laugh when our players display ineptitude!) and people who do abuse players from the sidelines are being counterproductive and are invariably made up of life's losers - people who vent their spleen because no-one in their own lives actually listens to them in normal circumstances.

But lets be honest, someone saying "you're f***ing useless" is not exactly the stuff of nightmares is it? Surely footballers can expect a bit of that from some types of people? What I will say is that any "banter" that crosses the line into personal abuse is definitely not acceptable, ever.

Fair nuff. I think footballers should expect to be criticised and endlessly analysed in the aftermath of matches, it goes with the job, but abusing your own players at matches goes way too far, and doesn't do a single positive thing.

Players accept the cheers and celebrations of the fans, running to hug them or gesticulate in front of them, so surely they need to accept the other side of things.
At my work, if i do well, i might get a thank you email for the effort i put in. If i do badly, then i get a letter of complaint. The bad is as bad is as the good is good, which is surely the same with being a footballer.

I'd never scream abuse at the team i support, personally. But it's going to happen.

As an audience who pay good money to watch a game - and iby default the players' wages - we have EVERY right to boo, cheer, clap, hurl verbal abuse etc etc.

BUT as supporters (fans) of Brighton and Hove Albion, booing or abusing our own players (or team) during game is so counter-productive as to be insance

A guy i work with told me today what Charlie shouted back at the fan abusing him. He apparently told him to meet him in the carpark afterwards.

Even less professional to be offering out fans while playing. Could have atleast waited till a break in play :lolol:

How would i know?I'm pissed.
Players are happy to take the praise when they are good, so they must be prepared to take the flak when they are not.

Am surprised this thread is still going, but I will add my bit. Yes, I do groan when players cock it up, we all do, and I curse and moan when we lose or play badly.

But I don't swear directly at players in the way that Charlie was abused on Saturday and never will. He, more than anyone, gives his all for the club, and doesn't deserve to be slagged off in that manner.

If McGhee has better options he'll use them, but he obviously sees Oatway as more than just a player, and takes into account team spirit and leadership as important qualities.

I know I'd like Oatway on my side if the chips were down. He isn't one to run and hide.

Some Brighton fans are incredibly fickle. I can think of plenty of other teams who would like to be in our place, and in McGhee we are lucky to have a manager who can manage finite resources so well.

Perhaps the moaners would like to be in Hereford's position?

I have never understood why fans boo and barrack their own team. What good does it do ? Do they feel better after letting off a volley of abuse at their own team ? Do fans really think that players go out onto the pitch and not try or don't care ? Getting on their backs only makes it worse. If a player makes a mistake it is just that a mistake. Charlie is still picked by Mark McGhee to do a job and as I believe Mark McGhee is without doubt one of the best managers we have ever had then I will back his decisions against the "so called" fans who abuse their own players and say that certain players shouldn't be in the team. I wasn't at the game and don't care how bad any of the team played, no fan should think they know more then the manager who has worked with the players all week and will pick the best team from the players he has available. Mark McGhees blue and white army.
