Given the choice the plane is the way to go, we were thinking about going to Scotland in the summer but changed our mind, flights were about £250 for three adults and hiring a car was under £100 for a week. Yes it may be slightly cheaper to drive but with all the hassle that goes with it no thank you.

Even the article says it's about the money.

The cost of servicing the current network of speed cameras must be enormous - sending vans and people round to every site to change film all the time and ending up with a system where, at any one time, most of the cameras aren't actually working.

The new kit will save a fortune in running costs - and the cameras will do their job.

It's not ALL about money, of course. It's about changing drivers' behaviour. An excellent objective.

And if it does raise cash for public services ... so what? It beats council tax, income tax or VAT as a way of raising revenue - it targets ARSEHOLES and gets them to pay. I'd be happy if more ways could be found to screw disproportionate levels of tax out of people with anti-social and criminal tendencies.

You reckon you can drive 1000 miles for under £100.

You car (assuming my maths is correct) will be doing 50 miles to the gallon (unleaded) or 54 miles to the gallon Diesel.

Agree with most of that but motorways the limit is just too low!! Having been based in Germany and seeing the autobahns!

Agreed if the maintenance costs are lower and this means we can actually get away from trained police officers sitting around catching speeders. Get them back on the beat i say

Depends where abouts you are but similar levels around certain cities where they switch the limit signs on (usually aroud 160kph)

Generally much less. Because they have a lot more autobahns.

Speed limits are surprisingly common too - at junctions and road works for example. They're also very strict on driving behaviour too; they've banned flashing at people (titter) to get them out of your way in the fast lane, for example - something that would make the cretinous Jeremy Clarkson wannabes of this world froth at the mouth and boom vegetative drivel about health and safety gone mad.

Anyway - it makes me chuckle when I read the advice to "check the traffic news and choose your motorway before leaving warning" in my Volkswagen's manual. Choosing between different motorways, the very idea...

They'll NEVER increase the speed limit on Motorways now, EVER! Doesn't matter how much safer cars are now, or how much shorter the stopping distances are, at the end of the day if they ''encouraged' everyone to drive 10mph faster the old climate change, tree huggers would have a field day with all the extra carbon being given off!

Where they have speed limits, the Germans have a curious habit that doesn't seem to have caught on in Britain ... THEY OBEY THEM.

It's a cultural thing. Pedestrians OBEY the little red man who is lit up at a pedestrian crossing. They don't cross, even if there is NO traffic anywhere to be seen.

We like to make and break the rules for ourselves, as the mood takes us.

Hmm, to a point - I think it's also a bit of an open secret that the powerful German automotive industry does pretty well out of having people knacker their cars far more quickly by doing 140mph for 3-4 hours at a time, so the government is loathe to upset them. It is ironic that the country that pioneered environmentalism has so far turned a blind eye to this unnecessary form of pollution - which, it must be said is also hugely fun to enjoy.

To be fair Ed that is a very true observation. Way less pedestrian deaths over there from what i can remember

Police are highly trained to drive at those speeds and it is a necessity of the job. A civilian does NOT need to travel that fast. Obviously price is going to be an issue, but trains can be a cheap option if booked in advance with railcards etc.

Possibly because there are far more cars than there used to be and road safety awareness is at a higher level than before.

What with the new rail price structure supposedly making it more "simple". Prices seem to have gone up massively as you don't now get the cheap fares just the standard off peak ones. Could be a massive extra cost when doing away games next year, may have to cut down as a result.

When i drive up to Scotland i wanna be doing 90-100 on the motorway. It's perfectly safe to do so and with 500 miles to cover it makes a lot of difference than doing 70

It's quite simple, although I appreciate there a lot of bloody selfish idiots on our roads who don't give a f*** about anyone else once the turn their ignition key.
