Looking at every other brighton player's leg in that photo, and the angle they are all standing, I would suggest his ankle is slightly to the right of his calf (though his leg is at less of an angle than the others, there is still lean to it)
Possibly. Although they are standing full on to the image - and therefore their legs are an inverted V. JPVH is standing much more at a sideways stance, so a straighter leg.

All-in-all though - it does go to show how difficult it must actually be to make these decisions in a relatively short space of time. Whether they actually have more camera angles in the VAR room I don't know.

It was offside.

But it’s irrelevant given we conceded three utterly terrible non-offside ones. That’s more worrying.

Focusing on the third goal is pathetic though.
Dunno - we were comprehensively outplayed but keeping it at 2-0 gives us a chance in the return. We were so messed up by the third we conceded the fourth straight away. Not sure about the pics I’ve seen on social media tho so I don’t know the truth of all this

I understand the confusing graphics and lack of transparency causes suspicion but we have to let it go. The VAR has the best view, training and tech, and even still are inevitably going to make the occasional error. It happens. Its part of the game.

It's unlikely to make any difference anyway to a tie we have within our own rights destroyed our chances in. Move on, plenty of football still to play this season.
I wouldn't mind an occasional error but we had FIVE written apologies last season where the ref and VAR got it wrong. Palace, Spurs, and three others. This season it has been admitted that two of Villa's six goals should've been ruled out, and, yes, you could say we were beaten 4-0 but goals change games. Heads drop, marking gets laxer as players tire whereas if you are still in the game, you still have adrenalin to boost you to try harder.

It was offside. VAR f***ed up (what's new?) and it made a difference. We may well have escaped with 2-0 without the VAR error. Still, we are almost certainly out of Europe so let's try and start to play better and do well in the league.

The third came when we were pushing and looked like getting back into the game a bit. It was a body blow to allow it, was clearly offside and if it had not been allowed, maybe, just maybe it would have ended 2-1

I was already angry at the wrong decision but honestly, this utter complete nonsense of a reply has tipped me over.
How can going 3 0 down (or not) be irrelevant to the outcome of the game. Honestly...

Right I got nerdy and I'm not having it.

That white line I followed across the pitch line so it's true to life. I have a VERY hard time understanding how JPVH's heel is closer to the goal than Mancini's armpit.

You're sorry that you don't understand how offside works?

Ok.
I don't think he was offside.

The lack of lines were just a coincidence. Not proof of a cock up.

My apology is because this goes against the view that he was "clearly" offside,

It was offside. Will it change the outcome of the tie? No.
Still, it made an impact that it shouldn’t have.
Let’s see how we feel if we win the return leg by 3 goals. Unlikely but not impossible considering the number of clubs we’ve put 3 or 4 past

Because we were so shite we'd have conceded anyway.

Moan about our non-league quality defending, making it about a decision from the officials lets them off the hook (wrongly). We can't control VAR, we can control the fact our defenders looked like they'd never met each other before the game.

I think it was two written apologies, one at Palace and one at Spurs. There were others that people felt were wrong but they were not actual apologies.

Just another view point. More than happy to be told why this is nonsense. I have taken your image above where you place dots for points of reference for VH and Mancini. In the first image below I have drawn a black line to follow the white line already on the pitch in your image.

I have then copied and pasted the line (so it's duplicated). Left the original in it's place and dragged that new black line to the left, to the point where your blue/green dot is being used to mark where JPVH's boot is. I come out with the below image. I even was generous and dragged it INTO your blue circle rather than to the first right edge of it. The point you have drawn for Mancini is to the left of that line.

I appreciate I have quoted your post. It is not aimed at you as such. Just more that you have provided me with a point of reference to begin with.

Angles my friend. Angles.

That red line is to the right of Dunk's foot, and to the right of van Hecke's foot.

And if you want to go with van Hecke's right shoulder, or even calf, then you have to draw a vertical line down, as has been done with the yellow line.

It's offside.

No, I said five and I meant five. We had five written apologies last season.

That doesn't work - if you kept dragging the line to the left, so that it lined up with the white 18 yard line, you'd see why.

That's why I've demonstrated the wiggle room to account for the fact that angle will change the nearer you get to the edge of the box. However the incident happened much nearer the penalty spot line than the edge of the box.

Someone more intelligent than me will be able to work out the angle the line should be at.

Agree it was a very poor effort defensively but still, just before that goal was wrongly allowed and despite the precarious defence, we had a good period of possession that looked like we might be coming back into it. Once the goal was given, the wheels completely came off. Had it been rightly disallowed, some hope would have flooded back in.
My 11 year old depicted this despair quite effectively. He was sitting on the sofa nervously eating crisps before the 3rd and we were all excited/convinced it would be disallowed and waited the VAR decision. When it was to our shock, given he somehow buried himself under the sofa cushions and watched the rest of the game from there.
