first point to note, its not that remote a location. there was a cyclist shot and another found the scene and reported. cyclists have a fairly short range. secondly, why is anyone thinking this is anything more than nutter? it happens, too often unfortunatly. just because one nutter likes to go about their business in a crowded location doesnt mean another does. or it could have been road rage, thought of that? pretty unlikly tbf, but probably more likely than a hitman taking out a holidaying family.

Of course, but unless they were on holiday with these fellow-campers who knew them very well, then any new acquaintances wouldn't be that confident of their plans, whatever the family had told them.

Depends, some families, even if they are complete strangers, become friends on holiday. Maybe they made some friends, ate with them etc. Especially if they are in a camp site, which can be quite intimate and everybody tends to spend most of their time chilling outside their tents. I remember when I was young my family went to a campsite and we occasionally ate with other families who were camping near by, the kids becoming "holiday pals" etc.

The car engine was still running when the witness came across the scene of the attack

The family's car was a dark red BMW old style 5 Series estate. Mr Maillaud said the killings were "well beyond TV fiction".

Mr Maillaud says three of the four dead were shot in the middle of the head

Do you think it could be someone from the old Iraqi regime who had been granteda new life in this country. British establisment decided it was time for them to 'dissapear'. From what i've read in books, this sort of thing happens more than we'd believe and is normaly done without a trace. This time it may have gone wrong?

A comment (now removed) appeared to be a leak from a journo saying UK Govt has imposed reporting restrictions on this story since this morning. So, if true, not only are we not allowed to know the truth, we're not allowed to know that we're not allowed to know...

Assuming the story is true, that a Mossad operation. On French soil - embarrassing to the French - of a UK agent - embarassing to UK. Of an emabrassingly stupid botched Mossad operation.
It seems to these spooks covering up embarrassment is more important than life or death.

which seems unliky. while the MO reported doesnt sound like a nutter (which earlier reports did, suggesting alot of shots), i find it incredulous that someone believing they were a target and needing protection would then just go off to the south of France anyway. since its reported that he's lived in Surrey for 20 years, rathe scuppers that story anyway.

I have no knowledge other than what I've read but, to counter your hypothesis.

1. You assume people act in what you assume to be a logical manner. They may wish to but never all the time. We don't know the facts, but we all do things we don't think are a good idea every now and then. Perhaps he was nagged for years for a holiday by his wife? Perhaps he was told he was fine to go by the UK authorities and was told any worries about his safety were unnecessary? As I said, UK Government are acting embarrassed - as they should if true but lying is not the solution.
2. Perhaps he wasn't actually not involved in anything to do with nuclear weapons in Iran at all - but Israel's intelligence was wrong - perhaps they don't care. It's a message short of invasion of Iran.
3. Who's to say he would be safe in Claygate anyway?
4. I would say the MO matches Mossad's (As far as I know and I don't). Remember, they were caught on camera in a hotel a couple of years ago while murdering (while carrying UK passports). That was stupid too. Mossad aren't all they're cracked up to be in the smartness stakes, just the brutality.
5. Killing passers by, family and children - only the passer by doesn't make sense, and only because it was in France. It doesn't make sense but it just proves how stupid and reckless they are.
6. It could all be explained by a lunatic of course, expect an lunatic will get caught. These ones won't but they'll be one hell of a diplomatic Sh*tstorm in progress now. (although there may even be a patsy lined up for it).
7. What makes one sense the authorities know much more than they saying is that news is being actively censored, right now. The OP sensed something amiss in coverage, and I've seen article removed from moment to moment today.
