The saved penalty

A lot of saved pens are often that the goalkeeper will do a 'mid-dive'. By this I mean not FULLY commit his body the full corner.

This is an example of boosting your percentages. I.e Alot of your body is going towards a corner while also leaving the legs dangling in the central part of the goal.

Some high profile saves that have won shootouts have been saved by the dangling leg in the centre of the goal. I remember Dudek in the champions league being very good at it. Also if you watch Joe Hart, he will do the same technique of half diving but leaving his legs really spread in the centre to cover more area.

For that reason I would say the centre is always a risky area as, even if the keeper dives, this can still be covered.

Of course this only really relates to shots at a mid to low height rather than smashed hard and high.

Am I right in thinking CMS hit one hard and central this season?
A goalkeeper will not do a "mid dive" as you put it on purpose. When you see one of these dives, its usually because they have seen the ball not going where they are diving, so pull out of the dive and tends to drop rather than dive.

Thats why when keepers are sent the wrong way, they generally don't dive full length, rather just drop, and the example given here are probably due to this. If the penatly is then hit central, there is a chance, albeit still a very slight chance that a trailing legs or stuck out arm will save it. There are also keepers that will suspect a central hit shot, and dive very late, but I can't recall the last time I saw a pro keeper stand up and save a penalty without diving/dropping off their feet. No doubt it happens, but I would guess not very often.

Still think a pro should score 10 out of 10 penalties. Dont care what anyone says.

In that case I've seen Messi and Ronaldo miss penalties.....they should retire immediately.

The thing is, this is actually a good penalty, one that, as has been said 95/100 would probably have been a goal because even when a keeper guessed the right way he normally wouldn't reach a penalty of that accuracy and power, the only reason such a big deal is being made out of this is because we are on a poor run and we can't score goals, sod the penalties we need to be scoring goals from open play, which at the moment we are completely inept doing.

But I always think, if we were on a bad run and scoring no goals and conceding tons of goals I'd be far more worried, good teams are always based around a solid defence and we know we have that, once we sort the goals out we'll be fine, of that I am certain, we are on a bad run, but at least we conceding 1 and losing not 4

But do I think a professional footballer should score from 12 yards with a free shot at goal every time. Yes I do.
Do I think the perfectly hit penatly is unsaveable. Yes I do.

That is completely ridiculous. If you take that to its logical conclusion, e.g every penalty should be scored. To ensure you score the penalty must be unsaveable. To be unsaveable it must be hit perfectly.

Therefore what you are saying is that every time a professional footballer takes a penalty they should hit it perfectly.

Even though the best players in the world do not manage to do this, you believe they should be able to........

How about you do us all a favour and stop spouting your egotistical nonsense?

He took one at the Amex at half time last season in front of the crowd.

Ha, yes - against Daniel East. So I'm 100% against pro keepers...

(not entirely sure of Don Quixote's point tbh, given that the post he was replying to, clearly pointed out, that my record was NOT achieved in front of 26k people, or against Kasper Schmeicel!

Glad to see I am not the only who has come to this conclusion.

More importantly how many penalties did you save in your illustrious career?

lol - i began playing in goal early on but played out on pitch mostly in later years.

Saved a few - i used to stand just to one side of the middle of the goal and dive to the bigger side and hope.

Have the pens Barnes has missed all been hit to the keeper's left ???

No. His miss v Reading was low to the keeper's right. (he scored v Cardiff to the Keeper's left). He missed one to the right in the 2010/11 season (but I didn't track who against). He also score two to the right that season and one to the left. I'm missing one of his penalties from my icon.

You spout nonsense, and I am assuming it's your ego that's blinding you to your inability to understand logic. Either that or you are just thick.

BTW don't try and make a point by omitting the key part of what I said when you use the quote function.

I can do that too, look,

I spout nonsense

I must be thick then, but you have completely lost me in more ways than one.........
