Briefly, its an anology that suggests that if everyone says or does something then it must be right and no one can take a contrary opinion. Sometimes you have to be brave and take that contrary view which seems to have happened quite a lot down this thread today.

See also Only Fools and Horses and Mcintyre, Michael. Vegster what else could we expect from you?...a man who grew up on comedy greats like Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy likes his comedy a little bit more subtle and visual surely?

I am quite clearly an idiot then. The Office was shit.

Probably the most absurd thing ever written on NSC. Christ even people who don't like The Office don't think it was shit! I'm guessing you're another Only Fools and Horses fan then miniature Al!

Yep, loved Fools and Horses. I like my comedy to be funny.

To not like the office is to lack intelligence if you ask me because it is so well observed and highlights the mundane and dull life of working in an office. I have heard people say 'yeah but Gervais is really smug in it and really annoying. Erm, yes, that is the point.

As for the current program then I agree with others, it works brilliantly as a podcast, I listen to them at the gym or driving to work. I am not sure it works on a visual basis at all.

The Office is the best sitcom ever produced.

Extras isn't as good but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not seen the Podcast but Ricky Gervais is a legend :clap2:

I do wonder, when people do not like the office, if it's because they are a bit Brent-like themselves and rather than find it painfully funny just find that is makes them feel uncomfortable. It's certainly been the case with someone i know.

Calm down Dear !

I think you should read up on The Emporer's New Clothes before you spit your dummy. Briefly, its an anology that suggests that if everyone says or does something then it must be right and no one can take a contrary opinion. I'm not being high and mighty,or superior, I just don't find him funny, simples

To a degree you are because you are suggesting that anyone who likes Gervais does so just because he is the flavour of the moment rather than that they like his comedy and that you are 'brave' because you take up a contrary position.

I don't consider myself brave just because in all the years of Only Fools and Horses, there were only two moments that made me laugh out loud. The rest just reaches midly amusing, in my view.

Perhaps you have to work in an office to appreciate it. I don't.

Possibly. I did once work in a place that was making redundancies and the boss (who was staying, as was I) was showing the new owners around and introducing people when he looked at 2 ladies who were losing their jobs and said 'you don't need to meet them, they're going'.

Having experienced people like David Brent at first hand i found it very funny, and scarily true to life.

Really enjoy the podcasts, his XFM stuff is better though as it doesn't sound as forced and planned, its more off the cuff. For anyone who is a Gervais fan I really recommend Cemetery Junction, it's not like the Invention of Lying etc, it's written and directed by him and Merchant and I really enjoyed it.

I liked the Ricky Gervais show podcasts, but animating them and turning them into a TV show sounds very odd. Mainly because people will obviously have different expectations of a TV comedy and I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of people were left very bemused - poor decision to commission this I feel!

And I'll echo what others have said, whatever you think of Gervais (I actually don't like him much - his stand up is the ultimate example of 'Emperor's new clothes') but The Office is an amazing piece of work.

I wonder how many people here actually like The Office because they found it funny and how many are sheep who profess to like it because they have some ridiculous fear of being labelled an idiot by the likes of Richie for daring to not find it the best thing since sliced bread.

Personally, I find Gervais to be neither half as funny or half as clever as he thinks he is and thought The Office was a prime example of a 'comedy' programme trying as hard as it possibly could to be clever, but forgetting that comedy is meant to be funny.

Ultimately though it's all about opinions, something the Gervais fan club in this thread seem unable to grasp.

An element of what you say is true, but whilst it sounds rash I honestly believe that The Office is objectively one of the most important/best comedys Britain's ever done. I don't really see how you don't find it funny either! The thing about people just jumping on the Gervais bandwagon is partly true, but don't forget that there's a lot of Gervais haters around now as well, yet I imagine most of those if they were being honest would still admit to the fact that The Office was very good - just a shame the fame went a little to Gervais' head - The Invention of Lying is one of the worst 'comedies' I've ever seen. And if anyone tries to tell me that it is better than The Office, they genuinely don't know what they're talking about!
