The postal strike [Merged]

Businesses change all sorts of things all the time and workers get used to it. For some reason publicly-employed workers seem to have problems with change.

Last year the workforce at my company got 2.5% average pay rise for the fourth year in a row and lost their defined benefit pension scheme and four offices closed. Did we strike? No. did we turn up for work? Yes. Why? Competition. If public services didn't have a monopoly then the strikes wouldn't happen. It's simply bullying because you can do it.

Royal Mail no longer has a monoply, it lost it in January 2006, so that blows that theory of your out of the water doesn't it?
No in fact the bullying isn't by us postal workers it's by the manangement, people like Crozier the highest paid civil servant in the land, on a £350,000 bonus this year alone.

I have asked on a new thread if they can be merged, no moderators online at the mo though.

In response to Adam Crozier’s comments this morning, Dave Ward, deputy general secretary, said:

“What Royal Mail has got at the moment is a dedicated, hard working and flexible workforce. To get their work done within their hours postal workers are carrying more mail than they should, not taking their breaks, and using their own cars to take mail out on deliveries. This all ensures flexibility for Royal Mail.

“Adam Crozier has not been involved in the recent talks and does not understand the specific issues around this deal. By driving through his idea of flexibility Royal Mail will lose the good faith of postal workers.”

This just goes to show who seems to be intent on ruining the negotiations doesn't it?

Very much so, as I've already said (god knows where). The CWU & RM management team are working well together, but when these proposals are taken to Crozier, he throws them out.
Which is how the TUC can say everything is going well, all day yesterday, and still have a final statement of 'the talks have broken down'.

He modernises businesses!!! Read into that what you will, he was pretty cuthroat at Saatchi and Saatchi apparently.
Can't remember really how good a state the FA was in when he left there, some articles said he did a good job.

The postman`s union is going to lead them to the same fate that the dockers and miners suffered. They have been offered 2.5% plus £800 lump sum plus a share in the profits,it will mean some of their shifts will be altered when there is no work available however they will have a 37.5 hrs per week. They will have to agree to use modern equipment which will eventually lead to some redundancy, but this has happened to many workforces for years now.The pension scheme will be altered in line with many other company schemes, again they are not a special case,in fact their managers are in the same situation but are getting no rise in their salaries this year. The Post Office are in financial trouble if this strike action continues many business`s will sign up with other companys to take their mail, then of course redundancies will result.I experienced the same situation years ago on the railway so the postmen must not let themselves be led in the direction that will destroy their futures.

What RM are doing is reminiscent of what happened in BT , restructuring and modernisation. BT used to employ 245000 now the headcount is down to about 95000. Thousands left on redundancy , their positions taken by agency staff and latterly moving work over to Indian call centres to reduce overheads. The BT final salary pension scheme was closed to new members in 2003. We lost various allowances - saturday premium , holiday pay supplement , foreign language allowance , night allowance paid at a quarter instead of a third. The working week was "reduced" to 37 hours which meant we ended working 3 hours a week more as we no longer got paid for an hours meal relief. Our union did their best for the membership but with a beligerent macho management it was uphill all the way , that union if your interested, is the CWU , the same union representing posties.

More factually incorrect posts!

The managers on Royal Mail are getting a pay rise this year:
