I tend to try not to go North if possible! Croydon and Crawley are so dreadful I can't imagine the shit-tips that must lie beyond
The irony of this thread is that the south-east is the dullest and soulless part of the UK - I'm sure that if it wasn't for London and work associated with being near London, a lot of people would choose to live where there's beautiful countryside etc....
Northumberland is bloody lovely, as are the Dales and the Lakes. Arguably, you'd struggle to match it down South.
In fairness, the Dorset, Devon, Cornwall stack up pretty well - Northumberland is great isn't it? Quieter than some of the others....

60p Vodka mixer in sheffield. Scary.
I have to work up North (Burgess Hill) so I can confirm the OP's view from personal experience.
Well as I have lived in Doncaster for the past three years I will come to its defence. I was up this way in the seventies for four years and it was a grim time. Modern Doncaster has been transformed. Best market in the country (you will not have seen the like in Sussex) and those lucky enough to travel up last year for the Donny match will have noticed the Stadium next to the lake and plush offices /housing. I live a few yards from the one time home of Douglas Bader and all the houses around here are made from the beautiful local stone. As for the people, they are generally great. They were even polite enough not to take the piss out of us when watching the Swindon debacle at the local pub. Most of Yorkshire is lovely but then there are places like Rotherham and Doncaster.
Whenever I head back to the South East now it seems to be full of cockneys. I'm sure people didn't speak like that when I left in 2002.
If I'm honest other than the hours it takes me to get to the footie the only thing I miss about the South East are my family, friends and the weather.
I am half an our from Snowdonia can get to Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Peak District, Pennines, in under two hours. From Sussex I would still be stuck on M25 in that time.
