Two great nights of Black Metal at Dust this week. Pretty decent crowd in for the locally promoted Abduction, Andracca and The Suffering gig Wednesday. On Thursday it was the turn of the Americans to come to town. Uada a band I have wanted to see ever since their debut album dropped a decade ago, finally came to town and did not disappoint. An hour of neck snapping, groove laden Black Metal the perfect Halloween tonic.

Bodega were absolutely stunning at Earth in Hackney on Thursday. Pretty wild mosh pit, which I don't think I've seen at one of their gigs before. Overran by 20 mins and got (great) support band The Gift to join them on stage for the encore.
I was at this gig, really enjoyed it, especially the hardcore section halfway through

Was lucky enough to catch Nick Cave last Sunday, this time in Lisbon. Another outstanding show which included everything from Wild God and other bits from earlier albums and Grinderman. The tour hits the UK next and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Perfect sound, great visuals and two and a half hours of quality musicianship. I was reading an online article and interview with Warren Ellis and it was saying how critical he is to the success of the band and how his own performance is just as captivating as Nick Caves. I totally agree. He had done something to his leg and mid show was on the big screen wrapping gaffer tape around it whilst Mr Cave talked briefly about their friendship. Both clearly very good friends and an oddly touching moment.

Had tickets for Public Service Broadcasting well before the Liverpool match was even a thing. Based on the train queues I know I was in the right place. Another band who know how to put on a show- which in places verged on jazz funk towards the end. I enjoyed listening to the tracks from the new album alongside classics such as Spitfire and Go. The set involved a huge backdrop comprising a mock-up of an old school cockpit with video footage displayed through the dials and controls. Even if you didn’t like the music there was enough visually to keep everyone happy. To think I first saw this lot supporting British Sea Power at The Haunt as it was then. At that point they had an old fashioned film screen on a stand behind them and there was just the two on stage.

Next up Beak and then Mutations.

Saw Zement, an “experimental/avant-Rock Duo” from Nürnberg last night. Also seen them described as psychedelic neo kraut-rock. A small gig in the cellar of an apartment block in deepest darkest East Berlin. A strict 10pm curfew, residents literally live above the ceiling, and an overrun of the support, meant they only played for 40 minutes but what a 40 mins. Quite a lot going on for just two people with one guy on sax, guitar and electronics*; the crowd were quickly grooving and whooping to the hypnotic rhythm.

They really do deserve a wider audience.

* this dude also has an ambient project called Schweben.

Race For Space is one of my favourite all time albums. Saw them in a smaller tent stage in Glastonbury some while back, superb. Rarely frequent gigs nowadays due to tinnitus (which I blame on back to back Gang of Four and Titus Andronicus shows) and wasn't even aware they were playing Brighton :(

AK/DK were fab at Alphabet last night. I really liked the venue and the downstairs bar is amazing.

Went with a friend who'd never seen them before. I found it difficult when he asked what they were like. "Well, there's 2 of them, and they both play keyboards and both play drums at the same time whilst shouting incomprehensible lyrics into heavily distorted mics."

He loved them!!!

Shall be missing Cave because it's too expensive and, more importantly, too logistically difficult, but really want to see them again soon. Agree about Warren, I think there's a symbiosis between him and Cave just like there is between Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, and think the role of WE and JG in their bands is really similar -- they do the impromptu stuff, pyrotechnics, etc.

It was expensive seeing him but at two and a hall hours with pretty decent support bands I would say it was worth it.
Hoping to see The Smile again as their Brighton concert is in my top 5 best live acts this year.

Beak> were just sublime last night. The sound is just so weird but utterly extraordinary and compelling. Billy's bass playing is like nothing else. The banter was predictably good and it's on this front that Geoff's departure will be most keenly felt.
I really feel privileged to have seen them a number of times.

Thought they were on top form and very amusing. Only seen them once before and thought last night was better with the new album being played in full. We managed to just catch the end of the support guy who was equally entertaining with his semi robotic guitar playing, never heard of him before but certainly lots of fun. Two minor negatives- the ten minutes it took to get from the front of stage to back outside and secondly the fact that the Asda beige buffet had all been eaten before we got there.
